Ah!!!!! I’ve got so much to do today. I really need Super Pooper to take a long nap. Please! Please! Please! Sleep well and sleep long. No, I don’t have a big meeting and I’m not finding a cure for cancer; I have to get ready for my annual Easter egg hunt! While it may seem trivial to some, it is a big deal around here. What started off as me hiding eggs for Sweet Angel when she was two years old, has evolved into a neighborhood tradition.
I’m expecting ten kids this year, but five couldn’t make it. The little boy next door made my day when his mom told me that although he had been really looking forward to their upcoming trip to New York City to see some Broadway shows and do some sightseeing, that once he received my egg hunt invitation (it’s gotten to the point where I actually send invitations now) he wailed “I don’t want to go to New York City!!! I want to go to the egg hunt!!!” Ah, it makes the organizational challenge of buying gender specific goodies small enough to fit into plastic eggs, assigning each child their unique egg pattern so they all find the same number of eggs, filling the eggs and getting the little buggers to stay closed, and then hiding over one hundred eggs in what is forecasted to be a 38 degrees snowy day, all worth it!
Feisty Girl asked me the other day “Mommy, why are you the only one that does the egg hunt?” Because they have their wits about them? What I said out loud was, “I don’t know, but Mommy likes to do it.” Last week Feisty Girl asked (this little one is full of questions!), “Why does his mom drop him off here everyday?” Referring to a neighbor up the street who drops her son off before school. I said, “His mom works and needs to get there on time.” This inquisitive six-year-old responds by saying “And you don’t work.” When she saw the look on my face change suddenly, she quickly added “Well, you work at home!” That Feisty Girl is inquisitive and perceptive! She knows it bugs me that there are people we know who think stay-at-home moms sit around eating bon bons all day.
So, I was quite pleased this morning when Feisty Girl let in the neighbor’s son and immediately said to him, “My mom has so much to do today!” And proceeded to recite verbatim what I had shared with her moments earlier at the breakfast table.
Fill 100 eggs…edit newsletter…download photos…write blog…wrap birthday presents…pack Sweet Angel’s overnight bag for her sleepover…pick up Sweet Angel early for her orthodontist appointment…do laundry so we have clean underwear (everything else can wait) and not to mention take care of her baby sister. So, thank you Feisty Girl for doing your part to advocate for work-at-home moms. Of course, the little boy up the street just wanted to wait for the bus.
