Yesterday at lunch we had quite a scare. While we all sat around the table chatting, I looked over at Turbo Tot in her high chair and immediately asked with a sense of urgency,

What’s all over her face!

My hubby was sitting closest to her, but I could see from across the table red blotches all over her face. When I got up to take a closer look, the conversation that took place moments before flashed through my mind . . .

Can Turbo Tot have a peanut butter sandwich?” Feisty Girl asked.

I heard my hubby reply “Yeah,” and didn’t think twice about it because she is one year old now and her pediatrician just said she could have peanut butter.

Are you sure?” Feisty Girl responded. She knew full well how obsessive careful I’d been about not giving Turbo Tot any foods that are prone to cause allergies. (Milk, eggs, honey, and of course peanuts.)

So when I saw the red blotches on my baby’s face . . . I got concerned.

When I saw her lips start to swell . . . I got worried.

When I saw the blisters form on her lips . . . I got very worried.

We quickly began wiping the peanut butter off of her and stripped her down to see if the blotches were anywhere else on her body. They were not. In the hopes of keeping it that way, my hubby rushed her upstairs to give her a bath, while I called the pediatrician.

As I waited for the doctor to call me back, I researched peanut allergies on the internet. Don’t we all turn to the internet in times of medical crisis to glean all we can about a medical condition?

And then don’t we all get a little freaked out when we read about the worst case scenarios and horrible side effects? Well, at least I do. I know to consider the source when researching on the internet, but no one can scoff at the Mayo Clinic who states plainly . . .

A peanut allergy can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Life-threatening? My baby has a life-threatening condition? I’m really struggling with that.

I’m trying to keep things in perspective. I think I prefer “potentially fatal” instead of “life-threatening.” It sounds more like a possibility than a probability.

Now that the acute side effects have subsided, we’re left with the life-altering aftermath. In the short run, I have to get her blood drawn and take her to an allergist to determine what else she is allergic to. In the long run, they’ll be a lot more because . . .

I have one of those kids you have to notify the school about so the other kids are careful not to go near her with peanut butter.

I have one of those kids you have to bring a separate snack for at soccer games in case the snack provided has peanuts, peanut oil or was made in a factory that manufactured other peanut products.

I have one of those kids you need to tell the parent hosting the playdate to make sure my daughter doesn’t eat any peanut products.

I have one of those kids you need to read every candy label on Halloween before she gets to eat even one piece of candy.

I have one of those kids who will always have to be extremely careful about what she eats for fear of inducing a “life-threatening allergic reaction.”

Yes, sounds as if you do have one of those kids - it MUST have really, really scary - but, she is ABSOLUTELY adorable!

Oh, my goodness. Maybe she’ll outgrow it — but who wants to take a chance? Not mom.

My oldest son had a pretty weird allergic reaction to scrambled eggs…we tried that at 15 months. He got blotchy all over. I was scared to death. I can totally relate to being overly paranoid, too.

He’s nine now, and he did grow out of it. (Thank my ex mother in law for discovering that one!)

She’s a doll!!! Bet she still looked cute with the red spots.

I thought you were going to say it was just jelly or something.

A peanut allergy is one of those “but it’s in everything!!” kind of allergies. But there really is a chance she will grow out of it.

Hopefully that will be what happens. :)

Oh wow! That had to be so scary for you!!! I haven’t had to deal with that but i do know several people who are allergic to peanuts. As mom it has to be tough!

I’m sorry to hear about TurboTot! Our daughter developed sensitivities to egg whites and dairy products which made eating and cooking difficult. Luckily she outgrew both sensitivities just after turning two. I can’t imagine how difficult and scary it would be to have a child with peanut or nut allergy. My thoughts are with you as you navigate this tough situation. You may already know this, but there are great resources out there for parents of kids with food allergies. This Soccer Mom Vote post has lots of info (and great comments) that you may find helpful:

Maybe she just wasn’t ready for it and she’ll outgrow the allergy. Fingers crossed for you–good luck!

Oh no - how scary! I’m glad that she’s ok. It’s one of those things that you never expect will happen to ‘your’ child… At least it is common enough now that there’s a lot of information available, and schools know how to deal with it.

I’ve heard of kids outgrowing allergies like these too - at church there was a little boy who was allergic to milk, egg and wheat products as a toddler, but he’s 3 now and has outgrown all of them…

Yup. Me too.

Although, we have done our very best to practice strict avoidance. She outgrew the wheat allergy at age two. Still allergic to nuts and eggs (she’s about to turn five).

We have friends whose children didn’t outgrow the nuts and eggs until they were well into grade school.

She can be around peanut butter and eggs, and can eat things just fine that were manufactured on the same equipment. However, if there is actual nuts or eggs in the ingredients, she gets very sick.

We keep an epi-pen around, and we do our best to let everyone know. Still, on occasion, someone will unknowingly “poison” her. So, on occasion, I become freaky annoying mom, and re-educate everyone until they want to run from me. :)

Because, ya’ know, she may eventually outgrow all of it, and not have to worry with any of it as an adult. Then again, she might have one of those random times of accidental ingestion where it becomes anaphylactic shock.

So, yeah … I can still get a bit freaky about it!

I have 3 of those kids. 3 with Celiac disease (no wheat, rye, oats, barley), 3 with somewhat mild dairy allergy, and 1 with an anaphylactic berry allergy.

So, we’ll take the peanut butter, and you can have the bread & jelly. :) trying to be light in tone about this - having kids who are 1:100 on several things freaks me out and really upsets me.

(as an aside, I’m a bit surprised your ped said ok at 1 yr - ours always said 3 yrs for peanuts & tree nuts & fish & shellfish.)

Best wishes as you navigate all the food allergy links and world (I make allergy-friendly recipes). I’m happy to pass any tips your way if you’d like - there’s a lot out there!

Great post

Hi - I’m one of those moms too, and after dealing with a peanut allergy for six years, I have to say it does get easier. Sort of like using a car seat - after a while, it become automatic.

If you haven’t found it yet, a great resource is the Food Allergy and Anaphylatic Network (FAAN) at http://www.foodallergy.org

Another great resource is a message board for families dealing with food allergies, including peanut allergies, found at http://www.foodallergysupport.com.

Best wishes to you and your family!

My dd is 11 now, and had her first reaction to peanuts at 1yo. It can be very scary and there are a lot more things to think about and do for safety, especially while they are little. Now that my dd is 11 it is very simple to deal with. Check out the forums at peanutallergy.com.
