About five years ago, my hubby did an ice breaker activity at one of his annual meetings. He asked each of his staff “Where is your favorite place on earth?” He then shared that his favorite place is Bermuda, our honeymoon spot.
Later that night, he asked me where my favorite place on earth was. I said, without hesitation, Seymour Pond on Cape Cod.
Several years ago we started going to Seymour Pond in the late afternoon (my favorite time of day) to rinse the salt off from swimming in the ocean at Lighthouse Beach. We’d frolic in the water, do the bathtub float, a shameful display of water ballet and the “famous dive” where my Dad goes underwater and lifts me by my ankles propelling me from the water into (ahem) a glorious dive!
I happen to mention to my Dad that Seymour Pond was my favorite place on earth. He was extremely moved that of all the places I’ve traveled to, Seymour Pond was my favorite. Little did I know how moved he really was!
That Christmas, he gave me a photo album. On the inside cover of the album was a picture of the earth with a black dot on the Cape with an arrow that was labeled “Shannon’s Favorite Place on Earth.” So cute! He then explained that the photos in the album were of the house he rented on . . . Hinkley Pond. Huh?
Let me explain! There were no houses to rent on Seymour Pond, but he found a fantastic house on Hinkley Pond. It is absolutely beautiful! The best part, especially when you have kids, no driving to the beach!
Now my favorite place on earth is Hinkley Pond, but I’ll never forget my first love. So, each year we bike to Seymour Pond and frolic, float and of course do our “famous dive.”
Thank you Dad for giving me such fond memories at my favorite place on earth!

Wow that’s amazing. Can you tell your dad for me that my favorite place is Bermuda, but I’m ok with any of the islands in that region?
Sounds like a beautiful place to be! I can’t wait to see the photos!
As you know, my husband and I honeymooned on The Cape, his family has been vacationing in West Dennis since he was a child and we’ve been taking our kids since they were babies.
We weren’t able to make it up, this summer - rats! - but, reading this post reminds me of just how much I love the sights, smells (yes, I swear I can smell the cranberry bogs from atop the Sagamore Bridge!) and the sounds of the tons of birds we spotted at the nature center.
So glad you’re enjoying your family and thanks for sharing your (and my) special place, with us!
I’ll be looking forward to diving in, next year ;o)
