Tomorrow is the last day of school for my kids. Finally! I know a lot of the country is already done with school, but here in Upstate New York we like to drag out the school year as long as possible with various field trips, class picnics, talent shows, field days, parades, plays, dances, concerts, and end of the year ceremonies. All events I enjoy, just not all crammed in a two-week period. I’m seriously not exaggerating. Anyway, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the end of the school year not only because I can’t handle any more freakin’ school events, but so we can all take a break from getting up early, homework, and packing lunches.
But before I kiss this school year goodbye, I want to talk about getting school supplies for next year.
Why on earth would I want to talk about that dreaded task where we shuffle aisle by aisle clutching our provided list of a million school supplies looking for just the right quantities, colors and brand specifications, only to get home and realize we forgot to buy the washable, twistable, primary colored, extra thin markers?
BECAUSE I’M THRILLED TO SHARE WITH YOU A WAY TO AVOID THIS PAINFUL RITUAL!
Amidst the crumpled pile of papers poking out of my child’s torn take-home folder, I found a form to pre-order my daughter’s school supplies for next school year.
It was as if I found the Golden Ticket!
What do you mean pre-order school supplies? I’ve never heard of that.
It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. I write the school a check for $37. (Their prices are lower than Walmart’s according to PTOtoday magazine!)
2. SchoolKidz.com (who has partnered with Staples) puts all of the school supplies required by my daughter’s teacher (specific quantities, colors, brands, etc.) into a reusable storage box.
3. The box is delivered to my daughter’s school.
Now that’s easy.
If you love this idea as much as I do, share this information with your child’s school so they can start saving all their parents time, effort and money. In the meantime, you can pre-order basic kits with school supplies by grade level. While this post is starting to sound like a commercial, I get absolutely nothing if you choose to get your school supplies this way. Well, I do get the satisfaction of knowing one less parent is shuffling through the aisles taking an inordinate amount of time looking for a transparent 8.25″ plastic pencil box or a 4-pack of low odor thin tipped dry erase markers.
Thank you Staples for collaborating with SchoolKidz.com to make getting school supplies as easy as possible. Now if you could just find a way to make school clothes shopping not take so long! ![]()

Some schools in my district use School Tool Box, a company that does the same thing. It doesn’t save money, but it does save time. And since time is money…well, you know the rest!
