Sweet Angel lost her tooth at a slumber party over the weekend. She called me immediately and I ran up the street to congratulate her. We discussed whether we should put her tooth under her pillow at the party or wait until she came home the next day. Sweet Angel decided to wait.
The next night she placed her tooth under her pillow and drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up the next morning, she immediately looked under her pillow with bated breath. Then came a look of utter disappointment and confusion.
I grasped for words to explain how the tooth fairy could’ve forgotten. I surmised that it might have had something to do with the fact that she lost it two nights prior at someone else’s home. I also added that the host of the party, Allison, had just lost a tooth too. That can be confusing for the Tooth Fairy, I offered meekly. I suggested we leave the Tooth Fairy a note to explain the situation.
That night Sweet Angel put this note under her pillow next to her forgotten tooth:
Dear Tooth Fairy,
I lost my tooth at a slumber party and didn’t put it under my pillow because I wasn’t sure which house it would go to.
Later that evening she asked my hubby, “Do you think the Tooth Fairy will come?”
Fortunately, she did!
This is the note she left:
My Dearest Sweet Angel,
I sincerely apologize for my regretful oversight! Thank you very much for bringing it to my attention. I pride myself on never missing a tooth, but unfortunately it does happen from time to time, usually when there are a lot of children sleeping in one room. It throws off my fadar (fairy radar.) I did get a signal the evening of July 14, 2007, but when I went to the residence and checked where it came from (a couch in the basement,) I realized I had already compensated Allison for her lost tooth. So, I left. Now I realize my error. You too were sleeping on that couch and YOU were the source of the signal, not Allison! So, to make it up to you, I’ve left twice as much as I usually do for that specific type of tooth. I hope that brings a toothless grin to your face. Those are my favorite!
Your Friend,
T. Fairy
Sweet Angel grinned while staring at her crisp $10 bill as the fairy dust floated gently from the note, causing her skin to sparkle. Then she said,
“I’m glad the Tooth Fairy came, because if she didn’t, I don’t think I would believe in the Tooth Fairy anymore.”
Phew!

Oh My God! For $10 per tooth, I’m going to grab my pliers and come over to your house!
My older son’s first tooth came out in his pizza. He still gets upset if the crust is too crunchy.
I like your blog and your family stories. Keep up the great work, and congrats on your ribbon!
Congrats on the ribbon!
My 6-year-old has her first ‘wiggly’ tooth so we’re expecting our first visit from the tooth fairy sometime this year. Wow, I remember getting a quarter per tooth when I was a kid, gotta love inflation!
I’m moving to your neighborhood, you’ve got an awesome tooth fairy, even if she has a little mommy brain once inawhile!
oh no! The tooth fairy regularly forgot to come at my house growing up… we just came to the realization that she was one scatter-brained fairy! But ironically every time she forgot, she was MUCH more generous!
Oh Honey ! that is so precious!
My son came in last week in the early morning to tell me his sister lost a tooth in the night. /(the tooth fairy) slipped in an slid it under the pillow when I was in the shower later the child came in baffled saying that was weird the tooth fairy came mom . I hadn’t even had a chance to tell any one it had fallen out yet.
I think my kids liked it too when the tooth fairy “forgot” to show, it seemed the guilt compensation generally outweighed the disappointment that she was late.
We have a lot of exchange notes to the tooth fairy at our house, and each one is a precious communication. We also had a fairly regular correspondence with the tooth fairy’s cousin Amber who is the fairy of dreams. She was a special friend around here for years. I am hoping she’ll be back with notes for the youngest who is just embarking upon magical believing land.
Hey Shannon, I was THE WORST Tooth Fairy. Multiple disappointments!! Finally I just came out and said, “OK OK OK, I am the Tooth Fairy and I am stupid, here’s your money”
That is a true story, sad but true!!
I hate ADD
TEN DOLLARS???!!!
Quick–I’m gonna knock out some of my own teeth. Send the tooth fair my way!
I haven’t yet had a child lose a tooth, so we haven’t yet had a special visit from this special fairy!
Love the pics, by the way. Too cute!
Don’t you just love playing these games with your children?
Um…can I burrow that letter ;o)
$10? I certainly hope that is the price of being late because I was thinking teeth were going for around $1 these days.
Phew is an understatement! Fadar?!? You are a gifted woman!!
