My Etsy Highs & Lows so far…

Comments

I have now owned an Etsy shop for just over a month. So here some of my comments on it’s progress so far.

.

I’ll start with the positives (as one always should).

  • Increase in new customers - By far the best thing about my Etsy shop is the number of new customers have filtered through to my main shop. I was expecting a modest rise in new customers for my main shop as a result of my Etsy shop, but not this many!
  • Increased visibility on the web - Etsy always shows up higher in the web searches so if you carefully link all of your websites/blogs/shops together it is a lot easier for visitors to find you. So for instance if someone new clicks on my Etsy shop (which I gave the same name as my main shop and blog) it won’t be long before they discover my main shop…
  • Community – The Etsy community is huge and members can participate at so many different levels from just buying stuff on etsy to setting up groups/teams etc. Members can get seriously involved with al sorts of Etsy community stuff and the more you put in the more visibility in the Etsy community you will receive, but to be honest I personally don’t have the time to spare.

.

…and the not so postive…

  • The copy-cats – Before I set up my Etsy shop I was pretty much aware that copying goes on in the craft world online. Now I have my own Etsy shop I of course have more of a vested interest in the copying that goes on with in Etsy. And IMHO it is worse within Etsy than is is outside of it. I was copied within 2 weeks and I know of sellers who’s top selling items have been copied and then undersold by copyists. I’m personally not bitter about it, after all I sell supplies so it hurts less than when someone copies your design and reproduces it. Also I’m sure my philosophical and calm outlook is partly a result of my not relying on my Etsy shop for my main income. I am dismayed by the lack of soul and morals that copyists have, but I firmly believe in moving on and always striving to be head and shoulders above them. However, I’m aware that I do have the luxury of simply turning the other cheek. I do feel for others who have tried their hardest to offer beautiful and unique items only to have some lazy s**thead come along and swipe their designs.

.

Conclusion (this is all sounding like an essay)

I still think that having and Etsy shop is very worthwhile because of the sheer number of new customers you can potentially attract and Etsy is important for search engine searches, but I think (if you can manage it) you need other selling venues besides Etsy (such as your own website, other Etsy style shops and how about your own blog – more about that in a minute). Take the time to link all of your selling venues together. Sprinkle the links of your various sites within each other regularly. You MAY want to consider selling your more sensitive/special items outside of Etsy if you are concerned about copyists.

I totally agree with you…especially the negative…that what makes me hesitate to come back there…It’s good for marketing of our webstore outside etsy, though…but if the only product to sell is a handmade, yup, it can be a problem…
I remember once, someone made a treasury and showed up on the main page of etsy…it was funny because all of bags from different sellers she/he showed were quite similar(^O^)…I really-really laughed at that time…
I’m sick enough of this copycat thing while sometimes, copyright can’t give enough protection, especially when the copycat lives outside of the country…
My tactic is, when I make a bag, now, I’ll make sure that the copy cat will take BIG effort to copy it…
Copycat person is usually not creative (of course) and probably, she/he only uses available pattern and too lazy to make a new one or may be doesn’t have capability to do that.
I think people who are creative and the bag making level is not average/basic are always challenged to design and make their own pattern…to realize other’s design is not a challenge but to have own idea and realize it, that’s the challenge
My Bag-motto, now: there’s no such a simple bag anymore…(^.^)…

Just want to share again…after seeing a seller make a quite similar bag as mine in etsy (my design is quite specific and unique…and yep, I listed the bag at etsy, too but then after long time no sales, I hide it), I decided to make no more simple bag…every design, fabric combination, size, etc has to be unique-ly me, fresh, And quite complicated…with those set in my head, I become more creative in designing and making bag…I’ve never been at this level before…
what makes me hurt is: those lazy people makes sales while me? hard to sell one…
what makes me feel better is: this copycat issue has indeed boost my confidence…i know i’m better than them in terms of creativity. They can make only “some” bags and depend on others design. It’s still lucky for them that the original maker doesn’t sue…while me, can make “any” bags i have in mind…i don’t have to depends on others…i really cherish my bag and…they are a proof of my creativity…

I have had my etsy shop for about 2 months and I do enjoy the process of selling online. This is the only place I sale right now but you are right you need to sell in other places as well. I agree the copying that goes on in etsy is a little much. I have had people convo me to ask me how I created certain items. But I will stick with and find other places to sell too.

Very true and informative article.

I have finally realized I need a second site to really sell anything. I put a lot of time into promoting my Etsy shop and not enough results to show for it.

E-Junkie sounds like what I will try in addition to my Etsy site.

Thanks again, I’m really happy I happened upon Craft Boom!

I don’t sell online or do any crafting but I love to do all my shopping on Etsy! I’m blown away by the beautiful items that people make. I’m curious, how do you know who the “originator” of a design is? Sometimes I will search for something and many different people are selling similar versions, like headbands or little fabric pouches.

Would crafters consider them copyists of each other? Or are you just talking about really unique items? Although, I guess with all the copying, someone like me wouldn’t know what unique is. lol. It would be nice to know who is the originator so we can purchase from that person.

I love this site and am especially interested in this post. I was just wondering, is there a reason that entries on this site aren’t dated? It would be really helpful if they were.

Thanks.

I get it with the copying. I’m on Etsy but have my own site too. One of my items were not just copied but the cute name I created was also. Made me mad! Ugh. But then I realized that people who knew me whether a friend or someone in the industry knew about my products so they knew where it originally came from. That’s pretty satisfying to me. I love reading your blog btw. Keep up the good work!
