This is just the post I needed to read this week. (I'm a bit behind in my reading!LOL)

My shop has only been open a month and I'm starting to feel those self doubts and worries that I've made too many mistakes already.

You offer great advice and a fresh perspective.

THanks!

Should have made it clear that the £18 limit applies to items entering the U.K.

Re customs charge - it is essential to keep your purchase below £18 including shipping costs to avoid customs duty. What is so annoying is that the level has been set at £18 the whole time I have been buying stuff - at least 10 years!

The comments on setbacks are really helpful - I am not the only one setting out to make a few bags and almost put off by all the goofs I make.

yes- I second everyone's woes of bags that are hard to sell. I'm lucky most of the time, but when there's so much mass produced stuff out there, it kills the appreciation of handmade work. People just don't know what they're truly getting when they're used to picking up a $20 bag at Old Navy. Lisa- please tell us about your bag making! We're curious! Thanks for all the great posts by the way- always love reading them.

I had a custom's charge of £12 too Florence. What was annoying was the £4 tax and £8 "handling" grrr!
I have a box of bags that are "too expensive" to sell - I think I just need to cut my losses and get rid of them though.
My biggest mistake is trying to have a go at everything, buying loads of equipment then realising I can't do it. Help me!

It's really good of you to share your mistakes! I shall look forward to the next post as I find it really hard to price my bags for the amount of work and materials that goes in to them. We're so used to searching for bargains these days that handmade work often seems pricey.
Ouch to Florence's customs charge!

I was so relieved to read that it wasn't your office! I am really looking forward to your next post as I think it is an issue that I'm really interested in.

Well done in overcoming, and continuing to overcome, so many challenges and thank you for sharing them so honestly - knowing these things does exactly what you intend: gives more freedom to make mistakes, without howling and giving up(said the girl who has just this morning had to pay £12 customs tax on something that only cost £20...because it had seemed cheaper to buy it from the States...arrrrgggghhhh!). x
