I used to advise my clients to leave positive feedback once they received payment but when eBay changed the rules I noticed a sudden rise in feedback extortion. This was not being done by professional scam artists but common and sometimes very long in the tooth regular eBayers.
It does make me think that we are all opportunist criminals at heart.
Protecting yourself against such attacks as a seller is a day to day battle, with no support from eBay or Paypal.
Most of my clients now choose not to participate, and keeping up with the DSR's is another kettle of fish altogether.

Hi Guys,

Yes I must admit the current feedback is a joke and really holds the sellers hostage.

I have found that some buyers are not even leaving any feedback anymore which is very strange.

I would say that if a seller leaves feedback first then the transaction is complete and therefore should get a postive back providing of course the goods were as described.

I think people running a full time business on Ebay need very good health insurance, the stress must be incredible.

I find it stressful and I do it part time. I think Ebay has made it stressful for buyers with their polices.

Such a shame.

Regards,
Jon

A feedback is a full stop of any business transaction. It does not only include a good payment but also the buyers’ satisfaction in the product itself, service provided, communication, exchange of products and refunds (if any).

I did not leave a feedback as soon as payment is made. It will only represent on payment status not the whole process of transaction. *LOL*

"His response? “I understand that I misunderstood when I saw the gift bag. However, if you see fit, I would appreciate two more gift bags of bonuses. I particularly like such and such scent. I’ll leave feedback once those gift bags arrive.”

I immediately changed my feedback policy."

I've read this post a few times previously, but my appallment is fresh every time. What did you say to this joker?

I struggle with feedback issues - who first, and then, does feedback really matter?

At first, I left feedback after buyers paid and I shipped. I figured I had completed my end of the deal as had the buyers and that was enough to warrant positive feedback on my part.

Then I got my first negative - a similar situation to yours where someone really didn't understand that my feedback rating says alot about who I am as a seller.

No one has ever left me negative feedback for something warranted like item not received - I only seem to get negatives from people who don't get the system at all.

Finally, when ebay announced the change that sellers couldn't leave neutral or negative, I decided to give up on feedback. I leave positive when someone asks me for it, when I'm a buyer, or if someone is a particularly great buyer. I think the system is one sided enough that my participation only condones a broken system, so I choose not to participate.

That is an interesting read. In my opinion, a negative feedback has more impact on a seller than a buyer, so a seller should leave the feedback after the buyer does. The seller is the one that puts the item out there first, instead of the buyer posting a need and the sellers bid for that purchase. Since the seller has to be the one to put themselves out first, they shouldn't be the first one to leave the feedback. This balances out the scale a little more.

I plan to write about the new eBay feedback policy in the next post. The amount of research available online about it is overwhelming. Opinions galore.

Maybe I’ll be able to be a little less whiny and more concise in that next post.

Eh. Probably not. ;)

I completely agree that the new eBay policy is going a little too far. Ideally, maybe they should make the positive only feedback ONLY IF the buyer has left feedback first? This way the seller can leave negative if warranted as long as it's not in retaliation?
