If you can teach the material to someone else, your mastery of the subject also increases. I've also found that even if you don't know what you are talking about; trying to do so forces you to understand. There have been times when I have been thrown into a classroom and expected to teach a lesson on some classic novel or complicated math problem (not my strong suits). I usually just suck it up and study the material as best I can first and do my best. What I have come to realize, now, is that I remember these lessons for far longer than those I just breeze through. As a teacher, I preach this mantra as often as I can.
