I think you are absolutely right. If you don't have, create or find a niche, you will always be just another writer for hire who is indiscernible from the majority. It is great to be asked to turn your hand to unfamiliar subjects but having a USP to market yourself with is important. I left print journalism to do 12 years in social welfare law (so I laughed in a nice way when you mentioned law) and have gone back to full-time writing as a mid-40s career choice. My 12 years in law is opening up so many current opportunities that I am counting successes an looking forward with genuine optimism. (Needs a lot of freshly-ground black caffeine at my age though!).
Thanks for a great post.

Hi Tamara,

I really enjoyed reading your article :-) Good job ! it gives me some ideas on how to start finding the niche that works best for me, and at the same time focus on what I am good at. A good piece of advice for a beginner like me :-)

Julie -

That is a huge question. Lorna and I are constantly on the look-out for ways to get hit our target audience and get more clients. We're still very much learning ourselves!

From what we've discovered, I would have to say that your best bet is developing a professional blog just about your business. Use it to talk about your work and about the business/freelance world in general. We feel it's so important, in fact, that Lorna wrote a series on it (http://emomsathome.com/freelance-parent/does-your-freelance-business-need-a-blog/)!

I'd also say you might want to check out Guru.com. We've had some pretty good success there, and I always see SEO content projects listed.

Best of luck, and share what you find!

I think that I've pretty much found a niche or two. I can write SEO content, etc. But my problem is finding my target audience. I get a good number of hits to my website, but I need to find a way to find my target audience without spamming. Any ideas? Thanks, love the blog!

Good article... I'd also say that we freelancers often stumble into niches... and that, over time, they change. For example, years ago I had a small reputation because I wrote for running magazines... who know, if I ever get back in shape, I might be able to do it again, from the Masters and older point of view... but that was a writing niche I hadn't planned on.

Hello Ladies! What perfect timing to read finding a Niche as I'm presently exploring, evaluating, re-inventing and yet, aggressively pursuing multiple work opportunities! Your message validates what I already knew, however, the fact that finding your niche relative to chosen field of work is precisely what I've been planning for and eventually implementing into my career strategy.

I'm an Business Professional, retired IBMer with solid credentials (MBA, Executive training at Harvard, etc.) and am currently transitioning from Family Sabbatical and back to work. As I interview and work with various Recruiters, the premise of your article comes to life albeit targeting a large corporate environment or planning for taking the "plunge" into Entrepreneurship (irregardless of business type or industry).

Thanks for a well written and sound article! It reassured me that my thoughts about where I want growth career-wise are truly valide and that nd answering that question > what do I want to be when I grow up? has a lot of merit when it comes to your basic interests and how building career path or selecting your job with those in mind would be a Win-Win scenario.

Once again, I appreciated reading your message particularly in the context and examples you crafted.

Respectfully,
Mr. Robert M. Salazar

Wow, there are some really great ideas in here! Thanks for putting a lot of thought into this. I hadn't thought of using the books I read as freelance inspiration.

You've definitely given me some great ideas to start with. Oh, and I'm creating a client database right now! I can't believe I didn't think to do that before. (Maybe because I just started and I have only one client at present...)

One of the question I here all the time is "how can I find my niche?" You've given clear, step-by-step directions here that anyone should be able to follow.

Finding a niche is exactly what bloggers should do. They could take your key points and they would be closer to discovering what they should do a niche blog on. Great post.
