As I worked my way through yet another batch of SEO articles, I found myself contemplating all of the odd things I’ve learned as a result of being a freelance writer. I’ve told people that my job is “sort of like getting paid to do homework.” While that sounds like torture to some people, I was always the teacher’s pet who really liked learning new things, so it’s a great fit for me.

Some of the topics I know far more about than the average person:

Bloodhounds
Home Security Systems
Pest Control
Vibrational Medicine
Parks in U.S. cities
Tattoos
Separation Anxiety

I Twittered (Tweeted?) about my thoughts, and found out that I’m not the only one with a wealth of random trivial knowledge.

@DebNg challenged me to ask her anything about pallet racks. (OK, Deb. I’ve got one for you…what on earth is a pallet rack?)

@DanaPrince shared that she knows pretty much all there is to know about rubber stable mats.

@athomemom says that she now knows so much about beekeeping that she could set up a beeyard and teach classes.

So, what about you? What totally random topics could you go on and on about at a cocktail party as a result of your freelancing career? Tell us in the comments section. You get extra points for weird, funny, fascinating, or downright insane.

Let the competition commence!

By the way, if you want to follow us on Twitter, we’re @berrybrewer.

This is so true! For me, it’s Face Painting, How to start an Ebay business, and taking care of aging parents.

I know infinite amounts of things about Indiana County government operations, jail construction policies and procedures and alternative energy and other green topics. Oh and medical insurance for jail inmates. That’s a good one.

For me it is: carrier pigeons, magic tricks, cake decorating, a diet of berries, traveling with horses, bird baths, hydroponic gardening (the legal kind!) and yoga.

The slightly odd one is that I know quite a bit about hearing aids - I’ve been wearing them for a long, long time and now blog about them too.

I can bore people rigid with talk about software engineering, web development and blogging. I’m hoping the first two of those three will be making a fruitful freelance business for me in the near future.

My green writing is my passion. However, the stuff that pays the bills have included bamboo flooring, algae biodiesel, and my personal favorite, all things windshields and windshield replacement. That’s exciting stuff!

Great post, thanks! I can’t wait to see what other people have become experts in!

Hey, I did hydroponic gardening, too.

Hypermiling, water for gas, home organization (which was a bit ironic)

Oooo…mine is capitals…as in the fancy things that sit atop pillars. Well some are fancy…some are simple…depends on whether they’re Greek or Roman………you get the picture.

Oh yeah, AND no thanks to you berrybrewer, I signed up for twitter. HA!! Come be my friend…err…is it friends on twitter or birdie’s??

Body armor. I know body armor. And I’m starting to get to know digital (especially mobile) forensics. Geek, geek, geek. Oh but it’s such fun watching people’s eyes glaze over!

You folks are cracking me up…carrier pigeons? face painting? the fancy things on the top of pillars?

This is fun!
