A few months ago, I was really excited because two different bloggers asked for guest posts from us, and two more asked to do interviews with Tamara and me. “Wow,” we thought, “we’re really going to be getting our name out there this month.” We felt a little like mini-celebrities.

We got together to answer the interview questions, and we had quite a bit of fun doing so, too. Both Lis Garret and Laura Spencer asked us some fun and interesting questions about everything from our families to our business partnership. We picked out a couple of pictures and sent them off and were quite satisfied with ourselves when they appeared shortly thereafter on these lovely ladies’ blogs.

But, what of those guest posts? I carefully reviewed the other blogs and emailed back and forth with the bloggers to be sure that I was writing something interesting and relevant to their readers. I kind of agonized over the posts as I wrote them, feeling like I really needed to do something extra special for the occasion. After a lot of thought and care, I attached them to emails and sent them off into cyberspace, hoping the bloggers would be so pleased with the result that they’d go up right away.

But they didn’t.

After a week or so, I contacted the blog owners to make sure my carefully-crafted prose had made its way to their inboxes. I was assured that it had, and that things were busy but that they were so grateful and would be putting the posts up soon.

But they didn’t.

Now, I have no idea what the proper etiquette is in this type of situation. In fact, I suspect that I wasn’t the one breaching the rules of etiquette, but that’s neither here nor there. To be completely honest about it, my feelings were a bit hurt, and I worried that maybe the posts weren’t as good as I thought. So, I would wait for a few weeks and then (politely) ask the blogger if he or she was intending to use the post. I was assured that he or she would.

But they didn’t.

I’m not a very pushy person, so I just let the whole thing lie for quite a while. Months, in fact. But, doggone it, I had worked really hard on those posts; and if they weren’t going to use them, I thought someone should. So I (politely) emailed the parties and asked that if they weren’t going to use the posts, could I please have them back? It turns out that they were fine with that.

So, after building these posts up in my mind for several months, I reworked them a bit for our audience and put them up here at Freelance Parent expecting they would get lots of comments and spark lots of discussions.

But they didn’t.

The blogosphere . . . she’s a fickle mistress.

Ouch! Lots of empathy.

I view it that if the the recipients let it lie for more than a few weeks, you can simply send a

“Due to time constraints, I see that you’re not able to use my guest posts. I hope your workload lightens up soon!

In the meanwhile, please delete my guest post from your inbox - I will be submitting it elsewhere for publication.”

Or something like that. Probably it would be a smart move to mention at the very beginning - if you choose not to use the guest post, that’s fine, but after 2 weeks, it returns to me.

That’s YOUR high-quality work that should work for you! I wish you success in publishing it. Anyone who writes for SparkPlugging must be quality - I’d be happy to review your material and post it at my blog as well.

Best wishes, Barbara

Hey guys.
I feel for you. From the other side of the coin, though, I’ve had interviews sit for AGES that I should have got up much quicker. Things get crazy! There’s times I’m nearly in tears because of scheduling difficult.

Tangent/example: My brother was in the hospital for 3 days, during which I had houseguests and watched my elderly grandmother. After that incident I had 3 days to recover before going to NYC for 11 days. Anything in my inbox will probably be in limbo til July and there’s no way I’ll be making my salary quota this month :(

Good thing I don’t have any guest blogs/interviews waiting for me.

You did the right thing, though.

I like to work ahead a bit on interviews for WAHM Talk Radio and profiles for the WAHM 2.0 blog - but I try not to work more than a month ahead because people do start to wonder if they did something wrong when they don’t see their contributions published.

Most of my interviews ask me ‘So when will this be published?’ and I can usually tell them but if I can’t I promise to have my VA send them advance notice.

Fickle mistress? Me thinks the blogosphere sounds like a man who doesn’t call when he has promised to LOL!

I can certainly relate to the blogosphere being fickle. I’m always surprised at which posts get the most hits and comments. You just never know.

Honestly, there are times when I think blogging is seasonal. Now that the weather is warm and kids (in parts of the US) are already out of school, I’ve seen a decline in the number of visitors and comments on my blog. While I pout about it, I’m also at fault for neglecting other blogs. The posts pile up in my reader, and I’m lucky just to visit a few blogs each day, let alone comment on them. Also, Root & Sprout (my website) consumes A LOT of the time I previously spent blogging, reading, and commenting.

If either one of you ever wishes to write an article for Root & Sprout, I would be absolutely honored to include it. :-)

Hmm…

Thanks for the link.

For the record, the guest post you wrote for Work From Home Momma DID actually go up back in March - here’s the URL: http://www.workfromhomemomma.com/2008/03/guest_post_tamara_berry_on_fre.html

If some other bloggers are holding on to your posts that they solicited, it is strange.

I can’t imagine a blogger who couldn’t use some guest posts from time to time. Everyone needs to take a break sometimes.

Cheers!

(Keep up the good work.)
