These figures are not accurate. I make a good living from writing and most of my work comes from doing copywriting and press release writing. Charging $100-200 per press release is more the norm for me. And SEO for $5? Please! I charge $100 minimum for 500 words. You can make a good living freelancing, but not on the rates listed here. Good freelancers, those that make a living doing it, charge more and are worth it.

I’m happy to be wrong on that $100 press release estimate. Good for you that you can command higher prices! It just goes to show that experience and specialization carry over into all avenues of writing, whether you are writing articles, press releases, or web copy. Thanks!

Press releases, on their own, don’t pay great. Good writers can earn $50 to $100 for each one
Naw, that’s way too low! I get $300-$350 for a press release, and I know some copywriters get $500 and up. However, they are not the mainstay of my business, and I don’t even really enjoy writing press releases. I will only write press releases in the context of a larger client relationship. Specialization is definitely the way to go. I’m in a field (dietary supplements and natural health products) where you have to be very careful about advertising claims in order to comply with government regulations. That specialized knowledge allows me to charge more. My advice to any new writer is to identify a niche and become a specialist in that area. As long as the niche isn’t microscopically tiny, it is actually easier to attract business than if you were a generalist.

Fantastic post, Lorna. I agree with every single point, especially the technology and specializing areas. I’ve done both at the same time (I specialize in a technical area) and it’s rewarded me with regular work.

I don't agree that "anyone" can do webwriting...well, I guess "anyone" can do it for a couple cents.... I definitely see print as the end-all and recently got rid of low paying blogs to free up hours for print. Allena's last blog post..â€¦Fire Your Lowest Paying Clients!
