What Movie Reminds You of Your Freelance Business?

Sparkplugging is starting a new tradition called ‘Spark an Idea Thursday’.  Each week we’ll be sharing some great ideas for a topic of interest to our readers.  We invite you to grab our image and carry the tradition through to your own blog!  If you do, please link back to this post so we know where you were inspired!

When I prepared to write this post, I had a hard time picking just one movie to use. There are so many choices, and for a writer, actually being “assigned” to write an analogy is like the ice cream truck stopping at your house, the driver coming to the door, and finding out that Drumsticks are on a 100% off special today. OK, maybe not that great, but still pretty cool.

I started out thinking I’d use Jerry McGuire. After all, the main characters in that movie really followed their beliefs. Tom Cruise believed in doing business a different way, Renee Zellwiger believed in Jerry’s vision, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. believed in himself. But, it felt too obvious after spawning the phrase “Show me the money!” (Also, “You complete me” pretty much makes me gag.)

Then I thought, well, what about my favorite movie, Lady Jane? It’s all about how these two young people use their unwanted power for benevolent purposes. Sounds good until you consider a) I’m probably the only person around here whose seen it (rent it, seriously) and b) um, it’s not got a very happy ending (keep a box of tissues nearby).

I also considered:

  • The Goonies (“Goonies never say die!”)
  • The Princess Bride (OK, I can make some pretty good arguments for this one, including using words when you don’t know what they mean.)
  • The Wizard of Oz (I’m sure there’s something to be said about how freelancing can take your life from black and white to Technicolor.)

But, in the end, I decided to go with the Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock/Dennis Hopper “classic” movie, Speed. Because it pretty accurately reflects my last two weeks in freelancing.  Ready for a big, fat analogy?

OK, so I’m admiting a lot here, but this is sort of what my last two weeks have looked like:
You step on a bus thinking it’s going to be an ordinary day. The next thing you know, some crazy person has hijacked the bus without even being on board.
-or-
You sit down to work on a nice little project you’ve been assigned, only to find out that the client—who lives across country but has your cell phone number—is totally freaking nuts.

The hijacker rigs the bus to blow up if you go below highway speeds.
-or-
Everything Crazy Client needs from you is marked “Urgent!” and you feel like you just can’t let him down. After all, you have a reputation to uphold, and you kind of feel for him.

The bus ends up driving in big circles on an airport tarmac while everyone else finds a way to safely jump ship.
-or-
The client asks for endless revisions, you feel like you’ll never get through it, and anyone who hears you complain says you should “just dump” the client.

I think there was something about the bus crashing into a subway and Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves making out in the rubble.
-or-
Since I’m still in the thick of this thing, it’s hard to see how the happy ending part is going to come about, although I suspect the “rubble” thing might be accurate.

So, if you had to compare your freelance business with a movie, which one would it be? Leave us a comment, or write about it on your own blog…Really, we’re dying of curiosity. Don’t leave us hanging.

OMG! I loved reading your post. SO true in so many ways.. “You sit down to work on a nice little project you’ve been assigned, only to find out that the client—who lives across country but has your cell phone number—is totally freaking nuts.” Definitely something I can relate to ;-)

You had me chuckling all the way through this post… excellent! Well, when you posed the question I immediately thought of The Net. I think that’s what it is called. You know the one with Sandra Bullock? She works from home as a freelance computer geek and does everything from order pizza to work and make reservations on the internet. Before you know it she’s being pursued by the bad guys, hiding from the law and trying to keep her and her mother safe.

That feels like my life. All I want to do is work from home peacefully and talk to my computer – oh, I mean talk to people through my computer. LOL. Disaster keeps striking and people are after me!

I enjoyed this… I may just expound on this on my blog. Thanks for getting my creative juices flowing.

This post is just awesome! I loved reading every single word. Seriously. It’s just awesomeness! LOL ;-)

I’m not sure what my movie is. I’ll definitely be thinking about it, though, and I’ll post it when I figure it out!

Thanks for an enjoyable read. How fun!

I hope you realize that wasn’t the end. Your client may be back in the sequel.
Oh, the thought.

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. And, Stephanie, I hadn’t even thought of the whole “sequel” angle. Thanks a lot. The link you left seems to go to a song, hopefully this one will link to the film for real: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Jane_(film).

Hi Lorna,
Somehow I don’t think either of the links quite makes it to the Lady Jane movie you mentioned.
Cheers Stephanie

Try this one, Stephanie. :-)

When it comes to movies, IMDB has all the goss. :-)

Anyway… hhmmmm… a movie to describe my freelancing career?

Probably the FIRST Star Wars. You know, the original Star Wars. It all starts with a shoot out and the ships being hijacked and the princess is taken prisoner but they sneak the plans out with the droids in an escape pod.

Eventually we find the ‘main’ character. He’s a wet behind the ears boy who has no clue what he’s doing but manages to fumble along.

Thankfully, he makes some pretty clued in friends that help him become a little LESS wet behind the ears. Just in time for him to start getting shot at.

They’re all running about like crazy trying to save everyone because everything that’s going on is pretty urgent and you just know you can’t leave the princess behind despite the old guy telling you to stay where you are.

You end up heading this huge rebellion and while you’re still pretty wet behind the ears you get lucky enough times to actually look like you’re pretty good.

*chuckles* That’s my freelancing career. I’m still feeling pretty wet behind the ears and sometimes I’m running about trying not to get shot at while I’m saving everyone but I get lucky enough times to make it look like I know what I’m doing. ;-)

LOL! What a great post, and the comments are awesome, too!

I think my career is more like the Shawshenk Redemption. The prize is out there, but meanwhile I have to put in my time doing what`s necessary while chipping away at my personal goals until I finally have a tunnel to the world where I really want to be.

And in the meantime, things don`t run smoothly, you get beat up sometimes, sometimes you get the library gig . . . sometimes you have to write 1 letter a day to get the work you need. lol

Pretty good examples of freelancing situations. I could go with several movies such as the “runner” with Arnold starring. Everybody is betting (bidding) and there is one challenge after another in each race. At the end Arnold beats the whole show and that would be the metaphor for beating the online freelancing game :)

Just my two cents ;)
