My boss would not spend $1,000 to get me an adjustable height desk even though I would take time off work due to back problems. He found a portable unit that sits on my desk for $500.00 and I love it. After 2 weeks of alternating between standing and sitting, I now have gone more than a month without needing to take time off due to pain. The company is Ergo Desktop

Ikea has some very reasonably priced options for standing desks. Also, I just use a standard drafting table at work (adjustable to my 5'10" height, of course). I've used a standing desk for ten years now. It has helped my back AND TMJ issues.

I just started using the standup desk I built. It's a little unconventional. Check it out:

I wanted and adjustable height desk a LONG time before I was finally able to find one that was reasonably priced (you are dead-on re: how expensive they are). I was sold on the idea of working standing, but not full-time standing --- I think being able to change position is really the key point.

I looked for two or three years before I finally found one, and at the time it was only the frame that the company sold. At < $600 though, it was a steal, so I bought it and used a interior door for a desktop. It's worked GREAT! : )

The company that makes the one I bought is called GeekDesk, and we just bought another one from them. It looks like they sell complete desks now as well.

If you're looking for something cost-effective, I'd definitely recommend checking them out: www.GeekDesk.com

I just finally got a desk for my treadmill! I've got pictures posted on my blog. I don't use it all the time, but just to get in extra steps so that I can get up to 10,000 steps a day.

I raised my desk almost a year ago. Hubby had bought me an iGallop to use as an office seat. I'm a big horse junkie, but have no time to ride anymore. I had wanted to use the iGallop as my office chair because I thought I could "ride" every once in a while instead of JUST sitting on my ever-growing behind 14 hours a day.

It was the most incredible thing I've ever done. I spend 75% of my time standing and the rest "riding". I have more energy, I'm more creative (more blood flow to the brain?), I've lost weight and I just LOVE it!!

We raised the desk ourselves using some 2x4's, plywood and paint.

*note: I got the standing thing from the publishing company I worked at 15 years ago that had desks built in that we could use a tall stool (bar stool/drafting chair) or stand while working.

<abbr><em>Wendy Milonass last blog post..<a href="http://armymomtherapy.blogspot.com/2009/01/countdown-has-begun.html" rel="nofollow">Countdown has begun</a></abbr></em>

Thanks for the mention!
I use my treadmill workstation desk as a standing desk more then as a treadmill right now. I just love the fact that I am now either standing or walking while I am on the computer at least 50% of the time.
It has only been about a month, so I don't know how the results will turn out, but I am sure my butt won't be as flat as it was heading towards. lol.

I have a standing desk at home that was really cheap (well, relatively). Fred Meyer has a "craft desk" by HD designs that is standing height. It's narrow but long and you can get five or seven drawers (more narrow drawers or more wide ones) or a mix. They don't always have it, but it shows up regularly.

Hello there,

I just created my own treadmill desk and discovered I need to just stand there some days. ( I overdid it and need to mix standing with the walking) I do however love not sitting in a chair all day!
I still sit for some things, since I use 2 computers, but I think this is such a great Idea. I am going to put a link to this post on my resource page.
Thank you for all the great information.

Hi Brandie,

Good thoughts. I do not have a standing desk but would love one.

However...

I do put boxes on top of my desk to stand: not exactly a touch of class, but it works and it's okay in my environment.

In fact, this is a timely article as I have been thinking these past two days: "I've got to stand and do this work."

So...

I'll probably stand.

Thanks for the reminder,

Lee

Thanks for the shout-out.

Whether a custom desk in a dedicated home office, or a countertop supported by a couple of old two-drawer file cabinets (my first home office), the home-based workspace - at least in these parts - has been centered around a seated position. But interestingly, I increasingly find myself working at the kitchen counter, lying on the floor, sitting on the sofa - or walking Riley (while tapping away on the BlackBerry). Seated isn't necessarily best - for body or productivity. Just make sure you're focused on comfort and productivity wherever you work.

But I must admit, that desk is way cool - and seemingly would satisfy all my workspace needs, except for when I walk Riley...
