I like to try out new systems to get stuff done.  It’s what I do, and probably why I love to help clients with their organization challenges.  I love trying out new things, “trying them on” as it were.  Call me a student and experimenter of organization systems.

Lately I’ve been somewhere in the middle of loving my PDA and hating it at the same time.  This year, after using one for about a decade, I switched from a Palm to a Blackberry.  My difference is that I don’t have a data package, and I don’t have my email “tethered” to my Crack… ahem… Blackberry.  I want to be reachable, but not that reachable if you get what I mean.  ;)

Managing tasks.

One thing I don’t really care for is managing tasks with an electronic device.  It’s not really very well suited to me, as I’m a kinesthetic kinda gal (that means I prefer to touch, feel, smell things instead of watching or listening).  Soooo…. what’s my point?  I’m trying something new: tasks on paper.  I love a good stationery or specialty paper store…. something about that paper and pens scattered around the room in a stylish fashion makes me giddy.  I love paper, writing notes and buying pens.  I could spend hours in the office supply store’s pen section.  Seriously.

Back to the subject at hand: I’m trying out writing my tasks and daily tasks on paper, actual paper.  I’ll still keep my calendar and addresses in my PDA cause I just like it that way.  But, I need to write things down.

Trying out this new system.

In case you’re wondering, I’m trying out this “GSD” system, which is short, sweet and super simple.  Love that!  (FYI, I learned about it from this fabulous blog post.)

A “Tasks On Paper” Contest!

Now, here’s where the fun part comes in for you!  I’m giving away some stuff!  Remember the product review I did on Staples new “M” products?  Well, I have the above items to give away (see pic at the top of this post)!  Here’s what you need to do to enter to win:

1. Share your tips on managing tasks with paper: I’m talking tasks here, like changing a lightbulb, doing an errand or calling the phone company.  How do you do it? (Pictures and a link to your blog post are perfectly acceptable too!)

2. Deadline EXTENDED!:  Friday, July 25 at 5PM PST

3. Be sure to leave your email address so I can contact you when you win.

Ok, now guys, if this isn’t your type of notebook, I get it, so you can give it away if you wish.  Leave a tip and show us what you’ve got!

Some tips on your tips:

They need to be simple, don’t need to reinvent the wheel or purchase a dictionary to implement them.  We’re talking productivity not rocket science here.

So tell us, how do you manage your tasks on paper?

*** Update!  Trisha of IdeasForWomen.com is our winner!  Congratulations! :)

I must seem incredibly primitive! I always write stuff down on paper! I do 2 basic things:

1) to do lists - I take a piece of paper from my printer and fold it in half and write down everything I need to do on one side. (I think I do it that way because way back when my piano teacher would write out what I was supposed to practice each week on paper like that, and one sheet could be used for 4 weeks.) If I start something that has to be finished at a later time I put a check mark next to it. Once the task is completely done I cross it out. I usually keep a separate piece of paper for longer term plans.

2) I don’t actually use outlook for email but I have it on my computer. I print out - yes, print out - a blank calendar page for each month and then write in, yes write in, with pencil what I need to do each day.

Primitive and maybe pathetic but it seems to work.

i’ve been in & out of a lot of home businesses, and have tomes of notes on each.
With a friend helping me “organize” I threw out most things from the past, though some could still be helpful.
Its refreshing to know that some people still organize on paper! (Me first & foremost — but really only to remember anything!!).
I’ve heard talk of all the mechanical devices, but probably wouldn’t have it with me at the critical time. — And then — What do you do with notes from teleconferences etc.?
Mine aren’t organized, but at least I Your plan is great for known tasks. Where I’m “at” if you leave spaces for notes on teleseminars etc. you have to go back to square one.

I try to keep things centralized. The more “bits” of paper I have, the harder it is. Notebooks work well (cute ones like the M line are much needed over here!).

I keep bills and other paper bits in a standup desk organizer so I can see them and deal with them as needed.

OH! You’re a girl after my own heart! Since I was 7 I’ve asked for “supplies” or gift cards to staples and office depot for any gift giving occasion! Love-love-love cute notebooks, pens, etc…have TONS of them!

I’m still a paper person at heart. I don’t know why either, but there’s something about physically writing a list or note that makes me feel better than just typing it in a digital calendar…boring!

Here’s how I do it. I have a Big fun notebooks…one for biz, one for family, one for bills and yucky stuff like that, and another for making notes and lists that I can tear out and take with me. SO I have 4 big yummy colorful notebooks. (it must be the journal lover in me) I also have coordinating photo boxes that sit on my desk not only as decor but they go with the notebooks too. So if I have receipt or flier or something that goes with whatever is in my notebook and is loose I put it in the box. I get board with files, so they’re like having little file boxes, but cuter. Eventually I may sort through, but I know where things are and they are cute too!
