The “Dailies”: Tracking Daily Tasks

Let’s talk about the “Dailies”.  No, not the fresh-off-the-press kind, the daily task kind.  You know, that stuff you need to get done today.  How do you track this stuff?  Are you stuck between a software and a dog-eared notebook?   Let’s talk about how to track, with the goal of getting them done!

What the heck are “Dailies”?

Stuff like: The laundry, the phone calls, writing a blog post, responding to that one email.

One task = one thing to do.  And, as in, today.

How to manage them:  A notebook, desktop software (like Outlook) or online with a program like Remember The Milk or Google Tasks (Gmail).   Get it out of your head and on paper or into software.  Cross off when done.

Other things to consider:  Is your list piling up, or just carrying over into the next day?  It might be a few things:

Are you really, honestly, truly attached to doing it? That lingering task might not be all that important to you.  Be honest with yourself: Do I really intend to do this?  If not, cross it off, delegate or move on.  If you use the word “try” in a sentence with that task, it might be time to cross it off the list.  As Yoda said, “Do or do not, there is no try.”

Is it really a project? Is there a start and end date beyond today?  It might be a project.  Get it off the list of “Dailies” and onto another list of Projects.  Don’t ya feel better?

I have to-do lists all over the place, and even though I try to be as organized as possible, I never quit trying to be even more organized.

I just installed this program, Samurize, which allows you to put text files on your desktop. I have my daily to do list in a text file, weekly to do lists, and big project to do lists. Any time I update those lists, it refreshes on my desktop.

This lets me keep the paper lists off my desk, but prevents the lists from being forgotten while they sit in a program on my computer somewhere.

I get a lot more things crossed off my lists since installing Samurize. It does a ton of other things but if you just want to have your lists in plain view at all times, it works great. I sound like an ad, sorry. I love just the program!

I also make sure I keep all my lists in one place, like a “to do” folder in My Documents, and create shortcuts so it just takes one click to access them.

I keep track of everything i do right from my Palm Pre Phone. It’s relentless. If you forget to do what your suppose to do it won’t stop beeping until you hit the button. I have the Microsoft Application right on my phone.
