Vacation: Really Taking Time Off

My family and I went on vacation recently. It was a break my husband and I both needed. I promised myself I would NOT work while we were gone. So, how did I prepare and then stay on top of things while we were out of the country? Here’s a few tips if you are going out of town and want to take it easy.

Clean things up before you leave.

Loose ends? Tie them up so you’re not tempted to think about them while you’re supposed to be relaxing. Go on, tale care of it…

Leave the laptop at home.

You heard me. It will be there when you get home.

Easy on the email.

I did take my wifi enabled device so I could keep email from getting out of control. I only checked it once every day or so. (If you have an assistant, skip this step.)

Resist the urge to take work with you.

I thought about it… Take the proposal along, notebook to write some notes, business book I am reading… Then I decided not to. My brain need time away.

Guess what happened? I was able to relax, and take the mental break I needed. You going on vacation soon? Take a break and come back refreshed!

Bon voyage!

Great tip Brandie!

I don’t go on vacation very much any more (lack of funds!), but when I did I always used to take the laptop, legal notepad, and files etc. with me. Then about 4 years ago I decided against taking work with me on vacation in an effort to try and totally relax and unwind. I would always have a mad rush and panic about 72 hours before I left, ended up working 14-15 hour days instead of 10-12, and wondered what would happen as I walked out the door to head to the airport.

The good news is that nothing of major consequence ever happened while I was away, and I did have my e-mail enabled phone just in case! I think what happens to us is that we guilt ourselves in to believing that we are doing something bad if we go on vacation and don’t take work with us, which when you think about it, it’s insane to think this way!

I hope your readers take your advice, and for those that are married and have children, your spouses and kids will appreciate it too; it makes for a much happier vacation all around!

Timely advice, Brandie. I’ve been debating whether or not to take my MacBook when I go to Paris, and have pretty much decided not to.
