My girls love it that I write a Seasonal Kids Activities blog because they get to help me make all sorts of fun Halloween crafts and Halloween recipes. They particularly like it when I make Halloween recipes because they get to eat them too! So here’s the lastest Halloween recipe we made.

What You Need to Make Witch Hats:

  • Refrigerated pie crust
  • Chocolate chips
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

How to Make Witch Hats:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Unroll circuluar pie crust onto counter.

3. Cut pie crust into 16 wedges (triangles).

4. Line the bottom of the wedge with chocolate chips.

5. Enclose the chocolate chips by rolling the pie crust toward the point of the wedge, leaving about 4 inches of crust unrolled.

6. Place rolled pie crust wedges onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper 1/2 inch apart. Bend and shape the pie crust to look like a witch hat.

7. Combine the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl.

8. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture onto the witch hats.

9. Bake 10 to 14 minutes or until witch hats are light brown.

This Halloween recipe is easy, delicious and great for classroom parties! For other great Halloween recipes for classroom parties, try bat cookies, ritz cracker spiders, or pumpkin shapes Rice Krispie treats.

My girls are already asking to carve our pumpkins for Halloween and we haven’t even bought the pumpkins yet! But since we are going pumpkin picking this weekend I thought I better research some printable Halloween stencils first. For those of you unfamiliar with printable Halloween stencils, they help the carving challenged like me carve pumpkins that actually resemble something festive instead of something from a bad slasher film.

Halloween stencils are really easy to use. All you have to do is tape them to the face of your pumpkin and carve. The fact that these stencils are printables makes them even better!

Printable Halloween Stencils

If you’re looking for other ways to create your jack-o-lanterns besides using printable Halloween stencils, try painting your pumpkins!

Presidential Candidates to Answer Kids’ Questions on Nickelodeon

Just because kids can’t vote in this historical presidential election doesn’t mean they aren’t interested and have their own opinions on what needs to be done to improve this country. Nickelodeon totally gets that and is giving kids a wonderful opportunity to get more involved in this historical presidential election.

On Sunday October 12, 2008 from 9:00-9:30 p.m. EST, Nickelodeon is airing its Kids Pick the President Special.

In this Nick News program, presidential candidates Senators Barack Obama and John McCain answer ten questions posed from kids across the country. Each candidate was interviewed separately so neither one knows how the other responded. The resulting interviews offer kids a fresh and direct way to learn about what Obama and McCain think about some of the pressing issues facing the country today, including the economy, the war in Iraq, global warming, health insurance, and immigration.

After the show, kids are encouraged to participate in “Kids’ Vote” and cast their vote for President by logging on to www.nick.com/kpp from October 12 to 20, 2008. Linda Ellerbee will announce the “Kids’ Vote” winner on-air on Monday, Oct. 20, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Both the special and the “Kids’ Vote” are the culmination of Nickelodeon’s year-long Kids Pick the President initiative to build young citizens’ awareness of the 2008 election process, its candidates and issues.

While I knew Nickelodeon offered good T.V. programs for kids, I didn’t realize the station was so civic minded!

Painting with Apples

Apple season is here and for our family that means making our favorite apple crisp recipe, an easy recipe for homemade applesauce or apple cottage cheese pancakes. But we don’t just like making things with apples, we like doing things with apples too! And one of the easiest things to do with apples, besides eating them, is painting with them!

Here’s What You Need to Paint with Apples:

  • Apples
  • Knife
  • Paper plates
  • Washable paint
  • Paper

Here’s How to Paint with Apples:

1. Begin by cutting the apples in half.

2. Then pour the paint onto paper plates. I recommend using red paint with white paper and/or white paint with red paper.

3. Give your child an apple half and tell them to dip it into the paint and then press firmly onto the paper.

4. Lift the apple straight up so the paint doesn’t smear.

That’s it! I said it was simple! That’s why this would be a great classroom craft, even for preschoolers.
