Thanksgiving Crafts: Pumpkin Mobile

Pumpkins get a lot of play this time of year. Don’t get me wrong, they deserve it! We get a lot from them as well. First we get the joy of picking them. Then we get the fun of painting them. After that they sit up tall and look very festive on our front porch.

Not only are they decorative, they’re delicious if used for this and that. I’m such a pumpkin convert. Anyway, considering all the stuff we do with pumpkins, I wanted to share this kid activity that illustrates how pumpkins grow. An homage to the pumpkin, if you will.

The pumpkin mobile is simple, fun and educational because it illustrates how a pumpkin grows from a seed, into a flower, into a green pumpkin and finally into an orange pumpkin.

Here’s What You Need to Make a Pumpkin Mobile:

• Pumpkin seeds
• Green yarn
• White paper
• Yellow, green and orange crayons
• Scissors
• Glue

Here’s How to Make a Pumpkin Mobile:

1. Fold the white paper in half and trace a small flower, a pumpkin slightly larger than the flower, and a pumpkin about six inches wide.

2. Cut out the flower, smaller pumpkin and larger pumpkin from the folded paper to create two of each item.

3. Color the flower yellow, the smaller pumpkin green and the larger pumpkin orange.

4. Cut a piece of green yarn about 18 inches long.

5. Glue the pumpkin seed about two inches down on the green yarn.

6. Put glue on both pieces of the yellow flower and sandwich the green yarn in between about two inches below the pumpkin seed.

7. Put glue on both pieces of the green pumpkin and sandwich the green yarn in between about two inches below the yellow flower.

8. Put glue on both pieces of the orange pumpkin and sandwich the green yarn in between about two inches below the green pumpkin.

This pumpkin mobile is colorful, festive and a great teaching tool, especially if you read the book Pooh’s Pumpkin afterwards!
