The other day we went letterboxing at a beautiful park, forest, cemetery. Yes . . . cemetery! Just because there are tombstones everywhere, doesn’t mean all cemeteries look like this!
In fact, I think cemeteries and tombstones can be beautiful . . . during the light of day of course.
So we trekked down to our local cemetery and went searching for the letterboxes. While we were exploring we:
1. Discovered a President of the United States was buried there! Considering we live outside a small city in Upstate New York, this was pretty amazing. But lo and behold, Chester A. Arthur is buried in our little hometown. His claim to fame? He officially opened the Washington Monument in 1885. But I digress.
2. Did tombstone rubbings!
What is that you ask? A very fun kid activity that creates beautiful works of art!
All you need for this activity are crayons, paper and tombstones. Just place the paper on an interesting tombstone and rub the crayon across the paper. It’s simple, but a lot of fun! And it goes without saying that we treat the tombstones with respect. We’re very careful not to get crayons on the tombstones and walk carefully around them so everyone continues to rest in peace!
