Like me, you likely can quote any number of retro commercials from the past 20 years. Do these ring a bell?

  • How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? (I distinctly remember trying to answer this question myself)

  • Where’s the beef?
  • Got milk?
  • Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too?

  • I’d like to buy the world a Coke

  • You’re probably feeling that warm feeling of nostalgia right now. That means those advertisers did a great job, if you’re still singing those songs 20 years later. So what does it take to create a truly classic ad campaign?

  • It needs to be appealing to a wide audience
  • If it’s a song, it should be catchy (one of those “I can’t get it out of my head” songs)
  • It should be simple
  • It should be different and unique from what’s already out there
