Sparking an Idea for Staying Motivated This Summer <!– /*

For work-at-homers (and non-work-at-homers), the summer can be a slow time for business. If you’ve got kids at home, it’s easy to get distracted from working on your business. I know it’s hard for me to stay focused. Here are some tips for avoiding that summer slump.

Start New Projects

Make a list now of things you’ve been putting off. For me, it’s writing a white paper. Good project for the summer. Maybe you need to brush the dust off your marketing and business plan and update it. Or clean your office. Schedule one project every month, and break down the tasks into weekly chunks.

Hold a Promotion

If business is slow, hold a promotion to boost sales. Maybe it’s a Summer Slump Sale! Send out an email to your contacts announcing the promotion, as well as a link on Twitter and Facebook.

Work on Change

We can all stand to grow our businesses, but during the rest of the year, who has time to work on change? Use the summer to decide where you want your business to be and how to get there.

Get Out of the House

Even a change of pace can make you more productive. Work from the coffee shop around the corner for a day or even just shut off for the day and hang out with your kids. You’d be surprised how that will get the creative juices flowing!

I’d love to hear your ideas for avoiding the summer slump! Share your tips in the comments.

Get out of the house is right! Summertime is full of fun stuff to do, and if I’m sitting at home wishing I was out there instead of working I’m even less productive. It helps to take time off and just have some fun. Then I can get back into the groove without feeling deprived.

Thanks for the great tips! Love your tip on Hold a Promotion. I’ve had lots of success with offering a summer challenge to my customers – ask them to join along with me in accomplishing something specific during the summer months and then offering a little gift, bonus or discount if they accomplish it.

I totally agree with you and Cindy. Getting out of the house is so important, especially in the summer. When you’re feeling sorry for yourself being stuck inside, you’re unlikely to get much done. Give yourself a break and then come back to your desk ready to go!

Thanks for your comments, ladies. I already feel the slump coming business-wise. Luckily I’ve got enough in my personal life (like moving) to keep me occupied!

I like the summer slump promotion idea too! Actually anytime is a good time for a promotion. Always thought we should take a page out of the retailer’s marketing book on that they’ve got the promotional calendar thing down.
