When you have a new baby you take them to the doctor all the time for well-baby checkups, but how often are your child’s eyes examined thoroughly? Due to lack of insurance coverage, the answer typically is “hardly ever.” Even with a fantastic pediatrician, there are some eye problems which can only be diagnosed by an ophthalmologist, but these visits are rarely recommended to parents of young children.

Cooing, sitting up and crawling are signs that your baby is growing. Your baby’s vision has stages of development too, but usually there are no signs to mark the progress.

The American Optometric Association encourages parents to include a trip to the optometrist in the list of well-baby check-ups. Assessments at six to twelve months of age can determine healthy development of vision. Early detection of eye conditions is the best way to ensure your child has healthy vision for successful development—now and in the future.

InfantSEE is a public health program designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care to improve a child’s quality of life. Under this program our member optometrists will provide a comprehensive infant eye assessment within the first year of life as a no cost public health service.

Free eye assessments are available across the United States, and all you have to do is search on their web site to find a doctor near you. This is an amazing program that is saving vision and lives. Please pass it along.

I used infantsee with my middle girl because her dad had a ton of eye problems. We learned taht she has an astigmatism before she turned one! Now we know to carefully moniter that, and we’re relieved that there was nothing more serious! It’s easy and FREE! Can’t beat it!
