10 Signs that You Should Quit Your Job to Work at Home

From the eMoms ArchivesI wrote this article well over a year ago, but at this time of year it’s particularly relevant. Searches for Home Business information peak at the beginning of January thanks to New Years Resolutions and a desire to finally leave that dead-end job to work at home. So I wanted to republish this piece in the hopes that more people make the jump to pursue their dreams.

Some of you are still in a job outside of the home, longing to take the leap into home based business-land. Are you ready? Well, if you can say yes to at least ONE of the following, you had better start giving a home business some serious consideration. Three of them should be a wake up call. If you have more of five of them you had better stop reading this blog right now and start on that dang business plan!! (Come back later though for help along the way!!)

  1. Your work-life schedule has become unmanageable
  2. You have a dream that has become an obsession
  3. You are willing to do whatever it takes in order for your business to succeed
  4. You dream of business plans and of marketing strategy
  5. You are willing to start your new business in your off hours and give up some of your free time
  6. You have the ability to go 2-6 months without any self-generated income [either by tapping into savings or by cutting expenses enough to live off of one income]
  7. Your “I shoulds” and “I wish’s” are becoming “I musts”
  8. You have a nagging feeling that you aren’t living up to your full potential, and you have decided to do something about it
  9. You are getting little hints from the universe that it is time to put up or shut up
  10. That little voice that used to say “I can’t do that” is now wondering “Hey, CAN I do that?”

[Hint :: yes, you can!! Do it now!!]

Thanks for this motivational post, Wendy!

I was able to answer YES! to every single question, except for #6 (the one about having 2-6 months without any self-generated income). That’s actually the one thing holding me back from acting now.

I hope this time next year, I’ll be able to report back that I can then answer YES! to EVERY question on the list… and that I HAVE taken that leap!

Thanks for posting these – I might even print them out and post them on my board

:)

Yes to 2,3,4,5,7, and 9. I’ve quit my job before and gone out without a safety net and it’s really not that bad. In fact, I’m doing it again in 31 days.

I can say yes to nine of them. Guess I’d better get myself over to the starting gate for ‘08!

Like the above commenter, I can’t exactly promise that I’ll make it for 6 months, but I am pretty sure that I need to stop waiting around for that day to come, too.

Wendy,
Your site provides great support and ideas for those wanting to pursue their dreams on their own terms. Great job.

I’ve been working from home for over 4 years and can’t imagine going back to a “real” job.

Best in 2008,

Hi Wendy,
Ive been working towards this goal for some time.

With the higher expectations of boss’s (including mine, the longer hours & travel people are having to committ to they are looking for happier alternatives and time to spend with their families.

Internet Marketing has opened up so many opportunities.

With the new year ahead it’s time for those New Year Resolutions and this was a great post to moving forward….

Great post Wendy. I had to start blogging because my wife is ill, I am an actor, and I needed a way to create an income that would allow me to have some flexibility with my schedule.

I’m hoping to be able to leave my day job by the end of the 2008. We’ll see what happens!

The great thing about working at home is the fact that, by doing something you love, you are able to tap your true potential.

Sadly, a lot of great minds are not being challenged as a result of the fact that they don’t know when to let go of a certain lifestyle which is not appropriate for them.

This is a great post Wendy.

So many important tips that should be written down on the mirrors, notebooks, foreheads of anyone entering this lifestyle.

I’m glad you reshared it for all of us and now has got me thinking I need to post it on my blog:

Hi Wendy,

Great article and a great motivator! I can answer yes to 7 out of the 10. I started on this a while ago and it’s definitely an obsession. I’ve given myself the target of being full time on the Internet by the end of 2008. Going for it!

Martin.
