Wendy, this was very interesting. I'm very familiar with Jason Calacanis' blog and his retirement from blogging (darn it!), but not familiar at all with the others.

I suppose it shouldn't be surprising that some bloggers would shut down their blogs due to death threats and outright scandal, but the way that so many bloggers are viciously attacked on the net (ie Twitter and blog posts) is pathetic and juvenile. Very sad.

Wow, this is a really interesting post, Wendy.

Blogs close down for one reason or another. That just goes to show you that blogging takes hard work to sustain. For the people that decided to quit, I think it's quite normal for people to go through phases in life. It is unfortunate that some people were silenced or were ordered to silence themselves though.

By the way, I checked out the Woeser site since I can read Chinese. It appears to be still updated. There has been several different blogs because either Chinese government shutting it down, or been attacked by Chinese hackers, so the saved contents were uploaded a few times to different websites. Some people also create mirror sites so I guess the content will never be fully wiped out, no matter how hard they try.

Wow, this was really interesting and eye-opening for me. I've been a blogger for over a year, but most of that time has been very quietly with no attempt at all to even attract trafffic. I just enjoy blogging! It will be fascinating to see what the blogosphere is like in 10 years (if it even still exists - I like to think it will though!)

Very interesting glimpse into some engaging blogs and the reasons and circumstances behind their downfall. There are certainly valuable lessons to be learned from the outcomes of those who have gone before us. Thank you for sharing your investigation into this topic.

I'm especially mad at how Kathy Sierra's blog was killed. These people that threatened her are damn jealous cowards. She should have kept on blogging because those idiots are probably too afraid to do anything real to her. Anyway, as a woman in technology I know there is still a lot of sexist crap out there. It's pretty unfortunate.

Gee Wendy, you wouldn't want to be the PR person for blogging. :--)

I guess blogging is in a constant flux (and hey, maybe it always will be) as it tries to find where it belongs in the scheme of things.

This is an interesting look at byegone blogs, Wendy.

I think that any blog which changes in line with the needs of its readers, will always survive- even if it doesn't look exactly how it started out.

I also believe that blogs which increasingly target an offline audience will also thrive.

This is a theme which I have been exploring in my weekly guest column on Liz Strauss' blog, which perhaps you've seen.
