I've been taught to be leery of installing wordpress directly through your CPanel. It's typically a few upgrades behind and in some cases, that might include some dangerous backdoors that were fixed in the more recent upgrades. Even so, it's a relatively easy process to install wordpress.org right from the wordpress.org site. And when in doubt there's a great Wordpress for Dummies book out there. Hello Wendy.

Your article about WordPress was great. I’m on TypePad now, but my sites are still new so maybe I’ll go ahead and make the switch to WordPress.

I have one question about your WordPress Hosting Comparison chart. What do you mean under the “Add-Ons” column when you specify Fantastico versus Standard?

Since I have a lot of reserved domain names (for new business ideas), I like GoDaddy’s low $1.99 rate for domain names. It’s a lot lower than what I’m paying now on Yahoo.

Your chart shows the GoDaddy “Add-Ons” as Standard instead of Fantastico. How would that affect me if I went with GoDaddy versus one of the Fantastico hosts?

Great article.

I installed Wordpress last night (well, this morning). It does require a little technical knowledge (knowing where the root is, using FTP etc.) but the final result is pretty good.

I still need to tweak it but I’m quite pleased with my site.

A good basic guide, although saying that those hosting companies have WordPress “pre-installed” could be a bit misleading. They have it available for you to do your own installation would be more accurate, although with Fantastico, as you have shown it is very easy.

Also, with Google Analytics and any other code like that (MyBlogLog, Technorati for example) I suggest putting them into a text widget. That way they are separate from your theme, so if you change your theme, they will be instantly available in the new one.

We are in the process of moving to a self hosted wordpress blog (right now on the night of Friday the 13th) and this information has been so useful! Thanks so much for sharing this info.

We still have to go through the plug in post and figure out how to transfer our theme, but I think we are close!
