Get ready, because after I wrote this post last year, I seriously couldn’t stop laughing for two days straight. I cried reading it again, only because these writings from my childhood were so damn painful… My eyes, they’re burning!!!
Last weekend, we had a family get together at my brother’s house. My parents had found a box of my old school papers, including yearbooks and assignments I brought home. They presented me with this box of memories, and I found proof positive that anyone can become a good writer.
Let’s first take a look at me when I was about 9 years old, to set expectations appropriately:

The dress I can handle :: sort of. You can’t see the wild hair in this reproduction, but UGH. And the workboots? Don’t ask, because I think I blocked it from my memory.
NOW, let’s take a look at some of the poems unearthed from my parents’ attic:
The Boy From Denver
There once was a boy from Denver
Who had a crush on Pam Henver
He picked up her math book
She gave him a bad look
And now he likes Dawn Tenver
Or perhaps this little ditty:
The Girl From France
There once was a girl from France
Who always wore jeans and tight pants
She looked at Dan,
And said, “Oh, Man!”
Now she is divorced with Vance
Oh, god, I’m laughing so hard I am having a hard time typing. But wait! It gets worse! And now, drrrruuummmm rrrrollllll please, for perhaps the worst poem of all time:
Pictures
Pictures make you look so weird
They made my brother have a beardMy brother is only eight years old
And all my pictures are covered with moldWhen the flash is wrong, your eyes are red
They also kill pesky bugs deadThey killed my favorite spider plant
‘Cause it wasn’t a nasty witches chantWe heard the chant on T.V. last night
And boy! It was really a fright!
I kid you not. Methinks I have just peed in my pants.
So there you go. From the bowels of Wendy Piersall’s writing history, I can now firmly say this is proof positive that if you think you write poorly, you are sorely mistaken after reading my early writings. Anything is better than this stuff!

LOL! I have a bunch of poems and stories tucked away somewhere in a pile in my house. I’m not in any hurry to unearth them.
You were as cute back then as you are today!
What an amazing find/gift from your parents!! These are classic and postitively hysterical!!!

These are excellent because they show an uninhibited spirit and a great sense of humor. So you should be proud!
Those are adorable and hysterical, all at the same time! It’s very nice to meet you, ‘Little Wendy’!!
This is great stuff Wendy! I don’t think it’s bad at all. It’s fun and light…shows you were in a pretty good space at age 9. Other kids might have been writing some depressing stuff.
I think you can turn at least the last one into a children’s book with cute illustrations. Have you read a Boynton book lately? The latest one we bought is called “What’s Wrong Little Pookie?” Our kids love it. If they start to cry we just say “What’s wrong little Pookie?” and they start to smile again. Or check out a Dr. Suess book and you’ll see that you were a budding star.
Happy Holidays!
Ahaha, poetry is fun, especially limericks. I love writing silly poems. I should do it more often.
Wendy, I think it’s your outfit that made me smile. I remember those adorable horn rimmed glasses that went with those hairdos as well.
Your a brave lady and I’m loving the peek into your past. Made me think about mine.

Hahaha. I found one of my old science reports when I last visited the fam. It was on the skeletal system. It started with… If it wern’t for the skeletal system we would be like bags of jello walking around.
I hope my writing has gotten better, but I am still writing about health and the human body, go figure.
i think u made a good at age 9 u were just starting to show what u were going to be in the future. I really admire your writing and hope kids at this age can do as great as u did.
I could not even write as great as u did at my age and even now i am still finding it difficult to write well that is why i am seeking advice from anyone who can write well to help me because i am horrile.
