This is something that I feel very strongly about. I have seen mothers giving up their dreams only to find as Char said that there was nothing left, when the kids left the house. For me having a child has strengthened my resolve to live my dreams. I sat there with the baby and relized that there would never be the perfect time for doing what I wanted. So I got started.

I have felt guilty about it at times, because following my creative passion takes away time and energy from my child, but then I visited a friend who consciously sacrificed everything personal for "the sake of her kids" and I found that not only she but also her children and husband were deeply unhappy.

So now we are a family where every member has little "projects", even my 4yo. And I can't imagine how cranky, frustrated and depressed I would be without creative outlet and work.

Wendy - great point. I know so many women who suddenly find themselves emotionally lost and with no passions to call their own when their kids leave home. Why? Because they gave up everything that was truly their own to raise them.

I refuse to be one of those moms. I have found a way to do both by working from home. But I also have another love of my life (coaching gymnastics) that while I have scaled it back, I refuse to give it up. There are days when my family is not so supportive but I won't budge.

Raising kids and keeping your sense of self is a tough balance, but it can be done!
