Attitude Trumps Natural Ability

If you have a lot of natural ability – skill, personality and presence that other people have recognized in you since you were a child – you have grown up believing that you have what it takes to be successful.
But what action have you taken lately that would make use of all that awesome potential?
Last week I wrote a brief post about how ‘doing’ (actually taking action on a regular basis) can put someone with less natural ability ahead of someone else with boatloads of it. The post was encouraging to those who feel like they don’t have a lot of natural skill.
An old supervisor of mine used to say, ‘I may not be the smartest or best looking – but guarantee I’ll work harder and have more fun.”
And it was true. He was the hardest worker and always did seem to have a great time. He wasn’t the life of the party but he was the life of the business.
Attitude can be added to the list of attributes that beat out natural attributes.
If you haven’t been told over and over again that you have what it takes – let me tell you today: You Do. It may not be ‘in you’ in the form of some innate skill but you have it available to you in the form of the right mindset and actions.
If you’re one of those ‘born leaders’ that were voted most likely to succeed – but you’re not succeeding – is there a chance that you’ve been told so many times that you have what it takes to be the best that you thought it would just magically occur without effort on your part?
Same advice applies… adopt a new attitude and take some action today.

Great Post!
I will keep your post.
Thanks Kelly
When I saw the title of your post I immediately thought of something I heard Donald Trump say. He basically said that being a good business person is something you’re born with and that if you don’t have it, you won’t get it. Unfortunately this got comfortable in my brain, but now I’m going to think of your post whenever his discouraging words come up. You’ve trumped Trump!
Ann, I have watched a lot of Donald too and I’m sure he’s right when it comes to doing business on a grand scale.
The thing is that for the most part we’re entrepreneurs on a small scale. Even the biggest internet entrepreneurs among us would measure as ‘micro’ when compared to corporate entrepreneurs like the Donald.
And truly – from what I’ve learned about the work at home crowd over the years, most of them aren’t dreaming of making it ‘BIG BIG BIG’. They’re dreaming of making the mortgage and a great family vacation once or twice a year.
In that case – attitude and action is more than enough.
I know some will read this and think ‘Kelly is saying that you can’t make it big without natural ability’ and maybe that’s true. But I won’t limit you if you won’t limit yourself
You’re so right, Kelly. I know a lot of people with a TON of natural ability who have the totally wrong attitude. They expect everything to come easy, and when it doesn’t, they give up.
Having the right attitude is not only important, it’s a REQUIREMENT if you want to be successful – no matter how much natural ability you have.

Attitude affects our altitude! I’m gonna chew on this post – several great points that jump out at me.

Great post Kelly.
I believe what you say is true, I am banking on it!
On my desk is a plaque that reads:
Vision without action is merely a dream;
Action without vision just passes time;
Vision with action can change the world!

I would put my money on the business person who relies on Attitude and Action rather than just on Ability any day!

Attitude Trumps Natural Ability http://tinyurl.com/m7by98 Attitude trumps so many things…Above all it trumps those stomach punches that so often cause us to crumple to the ground. I admit that curling up in a ball may be easier, but the essential attitude adjustment is what will get you up and runnning again. My problem is that while I work to maintain and believe in a positive attitude, some people interpret it as me not facing reality. I need my go gettem’, girl attitude to acquire the focus and management skills I lack. What a killer force I’ll be then.
For *me* attitude has everything to do with progress. How I think about something has nothing to do with whether or not it’s achievable. Applying personal growth (by reading, listening to audios, etc.)[expands my limited beliefs] thus allows my attitude to positively increase. Yes, attitude does affect our altitude

This goes right along with one of Vince Lombardi’s quotes:
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.”

I love this. You have to believe in yourself – the only one who can adjust your attitude is you! Our grandparents had it right – we expect so much to come easy. A little hard work can go a long way.
