Referencing my previous post in regards to my eBook distribution experiment, I can say thus far it has been a success, creating problems I can only be happy to have.
In one day, the eBook received nearly 200 downloads, and I more than doubled my newsletter subscribers (now I didn’t have that many to begin with, but I like focusing on things in a positive way…). The good problem is that most people signed up for a newsletter I haven’t started publishing yet… so I need to start one now asap!
Also, I had a huge round of success with my post on Friendster, because I posted about it right away after the news release on Red Herring. A reader [thank you, reader!!!] forwarded the entry to one of the community moderators at AdlandPro, and the resulting link sent a healthy amount of traffic my way as well. It pays to be timely when blogging about news!
I’ve had this happen in the past when I post about newsworthy subjects. I should have thought earlier of the suggestion I am about to make:: set up news alerts about topics that are relevant to your blog, so that when news hits, you can write about it right away. I really can’t believe I am only thinking of that just now…

There is a way to go even one step farther, to be a little faster.
I once read a suggestion on a SEO discussion board that one should “predict” certain events that re-occur. Such as Israel attacking Palestine, a roadside bomb in Iraq, or topics such as freedom of speech coming up in the headlines.
Pick one that relates to your site, and then pre-write the article. When the news alert comes in, you can make a few last second alterations to include the facts on this particular bit of news and then publish. While others are getting their articles typed up, and might publish sloppily and with errors, yours will be polished and most importantly first.
You see, as people start looking for news, they link to the first or second source they come to, which means you get the lion’s share of links, and of the traffic if you can beat out the market.
This tactic works especially well for sporting events where you can write one report for each team playing and then just give the report on the winner.
Watch the professional News Networks when real edge-of-your-seat news breaks, they’ll have unpolished stories that feel more hurried.
I’ll bet they have a stock of “Hurricane comming”, “Abortion in the headlines” etc. scripts that they can drop a few facts in and publish.
It only makes economic sense
