Hi,

I stumbled across your sight on my usual web trawl for points of interest to read ! My main reason for looking was to gain some clarification as to timescale it takes to get ranked ?

Whilst i am an experienced marketeer mainly affiliate and know alot about that sphere im pretty clueless as to Google PR.

As an example of what i am talking about i came out from under the wire so to speak to launch myself on wider IM market with knowledge i have gleened in years as an affiliate .My blog from standing start has an alexa rank of i.3 million in less than 3 months.Yahoo slurp has crawled site over 7000 times this month alone and google 2500 times.I own a large chunk of Web Real Estate with both as i am also well published as an author and know quite a bit about Web publicity .As an example if you search my name with internet added on yahoo you can go 100 pags plus deep and i own them all .

Why say all of above ? Because to date no PR has been forthcoming from google.Which has left me scratching my head although i wonder if it is because domain is ann add on from my main hosting acct ? Purely because i viewed it as a project although it seems to be occupying alot of my time and resources now.

To such an extent i am currently having whole site re designed by my program guy.Which is due to me really throwing it up initially .

however i would be delighted to hear your comments re google PR.

Yours

I too am the owner of a site with no page rank- it because I had to move my own site to it's own domain from an already existing ranked page... Anyway I just wanted to chime in about page rank and the stinginess you mentioned.

Focusing on page rank when your site is new is much like putting the cart before the horse in a sense.

Content is the most important thing, its what readers want and it's why they visit search engines. Sites that exist for the sole purpose of making money are often not beneficial to the "end user"... Furthermore, there are so brand new sites out there that are spammy or viewed as junk.

The delay in obtaining page rank and getting listed in the search engines is a way to ensure the site is permanent and that it's got something to offer the end user.

I don't agree with sites who refuses to link to link to other sites that don't have good page rank. whether or not you link should be determined by how beneficial the site is to your users, not how beneficial it will be for your own page rank.

Good for you for sharing the "link luv"!! Keep us the good work! Have a great holiday!

Hi Wendy,

great post :)

I think that the ungenerous of spirit are their own worst enemies - sooner or later they isolate themselves. And even if they succeed - who would want to live like that anyway?

You are the living proof of the saying "Share the love and it comes back to you".

Best regards, Andrew

Amazing post. As a relatively new blogger myself, I'm far from understanding all there is to learn about page rank and all that jazz. I read tons of blog posts about ways to improve your blog traffic, such as yours here, Andy Beard, Darren Rowse and others. Every post I've read makes clear that you have to write good content, with good titles. I'm focusing my attention on that for now, and hopefully over time other bloggers will like what they find and will link to my site. Thanks again for this great post. I'm inspired every time I stop by.

Thanks for the link Wendy :-)

I can't understand the snobbery of people who actually care about something like page rank. When I add links to my blog, I do so because I feel they will have some value for my readers and PR doesn't enter the equation. It's the same for external links, we all have to start somewhere and what is a new, unranked blog today, could be the 'next big thing' tomorrow - the blogger who turned Lizzie down might be the one asking for a link in the future.

That seems really rotten, I'd never heard of that practice and I'm glad people who linked to me when I first started blogging were more generous than that. What goes around comes around.

PageRank is something I pay very little attention to, for the same reasons as others who don't pay much attention to it. It's nice to have, but it's really not a good determination of how much quality content is on my site.

Thanks for the link Wendy!

I have quit paying attention to PR and started working on creating quality sites that my readers might want to return to a long time ago.

The web is too full of garbage already.
I'd rather feel like I helped someone with my site than that I just boosted my PR and made someone else feel like crap in the process because I "couldn't" link to them for fear of losing some PR.

I branched out into freelance writing over the summer, and I can't tell you how excited I was to come across this site AND Freelance Parent. Hooray!! Not only do I advertise my services on my own site, but I also work to showcase others through my "Support Mompreneuers" page and by opening up my Friday "Up For Debate" posts to contributing writers. To me, it's all about developing relationships rather than seeing who can build the most links more quickly.

Snoskred, in more ways than 10 do I get angry and frustrated with Google. That's a post in and of itself with their arrogant attitude that claims to put users first when in so many ways their policies are far more self-serving than anything else.

By the way, this site didn't get a page rank for 6 months from the time I started it. Then I suddenly went up to a 4. Go figure.

But honestly, Google is very against web site owners selling ad space based on page rank. They don't want people to be able to buy their way into the rankings (oh, the hypocrisy...). At the same time, I can kind of understand their dilemma - because it makes it easy for spam sites to simply buy their way into the SERPs.

Google has even said that you must report and tag your advertisements with "NoFollow" - but frankly, it isn't my job to build my site code to let Google know how I make money off of my site.

See??? I told you this would turn into a blog post!! ;)

By the way, this site didn’t get a page rank for 6 months from the time I started it. Then I suddenly went up to a 4. Go figure.

But honestly, Google is very against web site owners selling ad space based on page rank. They don’t want people to be able to buy their way into the rankings (oh, the hypocrisy…). At the same time, I can kind of understand their dilemma – because it makes it easy for spam sites to simply buy their way into the SERPs.

Google has even said that you must report and tag your advertisements with “NoFollow” – but frankly, it isn’t my job to build my site code to let Google know how I make money off of my site.

See??? I told you this would turn into a blog post!!

I tell you what fosters an attitude of anger - Google not updating their page rank since I believe 5 months ago.

I had a page rank of 4. I bought a brand new domain in July which has a page rank of n/a. I worked my butt off to get the PR up on that site between buying the domain and the end of August, because that is when the next update was supposed to be. I'm still waiting. The page still has a page rank of n/a. It may continue to have a page rank of n/a unless Google updates the page rank, which may not happen any time soon. Yet they manage to update it internally on a daily basis.

I would not mind, except some advertisers use page rank as their main criteria for picking a blog out to advertise on. So, the bottom line is, Google is costing me money. And we're not talking a little amount of money.

That fosters anger towards Google. They should seriously think about how many people they are upsetting by delaying this update. Possibly they think we all rely on them and they can do whatever they like and we'll still love them and use them and their services. I have to say if they think that, they are fooling themselves. :( I feel like yanking all my gmail accounts, moving away from google reader, dumping google analytics and the wonderful Google calendar which I just found, purely on principle.

Cheers,
