Guest Blogging and Article Marketing Are Not The Same

Just a quick post to hopefully clear something up.

There is a big difference between Guest Blogging and Article Marketing.

Article Marketing involves you writing an article and making it available to web and print publishers with Free Reprint Rights.  Basically, you tell publishers they can use your content as is so long as they include your author bio with a live link back to your own website.

The articles you write can be used by many different publishers and that is in fact your goal – to see your content spread far and wide, reaching as many eyeballs and building as many links back to your site as possible.

Guest Blogging on the other hand is you writing as a guest blogger for one blog.  The blog post you write is written for the specific blog’s audience.  Typically, that blog post is not published elsewhere – not even on your own website.

There are no hard rules on this but it is generally understood that it is in bad form to take content you wrote as a guest blogger and publish it on another blog or website.

Now I want to know… What do you think?  Do you agree or disagree?

I agree Kelly and I believe both are important and can be valuable to your business. I currently do both. I have three very niched blogs that I contribute to as a guest post-er once a month. Then I release articles to Ezinearticles.com and similar sites for distribution. So, yes! I agree.

Yup, I agree. Article marketing and guest posting are two very different things, and if a guest poster on my blog then posted her content elsewhere, I think I would be justified in being a bit offended.

I have never written a guest-post. I wonder if it would be ok to re-post on your own blog, after the guest blog had been indexed by Google, therefore giving it the “google” originator SEO boost.

Posting it on your own blog after that would not be of SEO benefit to you since Google would most likely discount it as duplicate content. However, it might help the originating blog both with a backlink and helping to drive your readers to the guest posted blog.

If this would not be the appropiate method of helping promote your writing, then what other ways would work. Obviously Twitter and other headline distribution methods. That still not meet the core eys of your blog audience. I suppose maybe you could add some sort of a “places / articles I have guest blogged” area.

Also, you should add that guest posts need to be written particularly for a specific blog, while article marketing articles should be more general in scope. You can’t add a general article on your topic to a parenting blog without focusing on the parenting aspect.

Yes I agree, it’s normal for there to be an agreement in email between the blog owner and the guest poster that the post is and will remain unique.

Even if it isn’t explicitly stated, it’s implied.

Are there any issues associated with article marketing? I understand that search engines generally do not like duplicate content.

I also agree, although I do think that as a guest blogger one should be allowed to post the article on your own website as well. Obviously not on any other sites, except your own. And giving credit to the original post.

Why not rewrite your original guest blog post so it’s “different” and put it on your own blog?

Or you could even rewrite or use the blog post to sprinkle into a longer article to submit to the directories.

This way duplicate content isn’t necessary and you get to use the same content in different ways, change it up and PRESTO-CHANGO!! It’s original content! IMHO

I think that it is definitely different and you need to keep things original. Re-writes are okay but you do not want to over do it either.

Well, agree for the most part but I also think that you may severely limit your chances of getting a good guest blogger if the ‘laws’ are too draconian. On a big blog like this I guess people would jump at it no matter what but on start up blogs or those who are getting the momentum going. I would relax it slightly.

Here’s what I mean. If you demand 100% original and they can never ever republish it anywhere that’s a bit hard. But if you tell the guest they can re-use a topic or expand on a topic they have written about somewhere else but that the post itself should be original (or rewritten) then I think that’s OK.

Ultimately I think it’s all about communication. When you tell the guest original content what is original? Spell it out. Too many people confuse original topic with original post. To me they are two different things. It’s easy to come up with an original post but original topics take a lot more work.

I’ve been blogging for a long time there is a lot of content I’ve written that is still very relevant but written years and years ago. I do dig up those topics, rewrite, refresh or give them a new spin on guest posts because content is not always about search engines. Person A may have seen it on my blog but person B may not have because they hang out at the blog I guest blog at. KWIM?

But fundamentally, I agree they are different. I prefer guest posts though, more fun, more interaction and I seem to get better/more loyal readers/followers in return.

Just my 2 cents – albeit a very big one :)

Yes I agree. From the owner point of view, people can easy join as a member, all article directory owner will welcome any writer.

For guest blogger, it needs personal approach to blogger owner. At least the owner need to know will become the guest. What kind of expertise they have. Also blog owner mostly don’t need huge list of guest blogger.
