Ouch! That’s a sneaky one.

I just recently spent a lot of time going through Craigslist for rental homes too, and there are quite a number of scams on there. I had one try the old “I’m off on a mission in Nigeria” trick on me, but that’s too obvious for me to fall for.

That is a pain. I am glad it wasn’t a huge amount, but then again, if it were a huge amount, these people would be more likely to trigger suspicion and possibly be investigated…

Wow, that must really aggravating! You now have to deal with a giant pain in the butt so someone can make $38 off of you. Grrrr. I would not have caught on to that scam either. Good to know about the PayPal auto-generated numbers. Sorry you had to go through that.

OMG that really stinks Kelly! I’m glad you got your money back but still it’s a huge pain to have to deal with something like this when you shouldn’t have had to deal with it in the first place – what a snake this person was!

This is just horrible. I hate not being able to trust people, but that is how I am now. I probably actually miss out on some good things due to the paranoia.

I’m glad you figured it out and got your money back. I am sure you reported them to Craigslist too. I would consider reporting them to their isp too. Bait and switch is illegal in most states.

I do have a PayPal card, but I had several auto bills set up on my bank card that will have to be updated now.

It is fortunate that I’ve only been scammed for $34.97 – it certainly could have been a lot worse couldn’t it?

Hi Kelly,
Sorry to hear abt yr experience.

I’d suggest that outside of a major retailer, you might consider setting up a VCC (virtual credit card) via paypal or through your banking/financial services provider.

Some paranoid internet users (with concerns of ID theft) will buy a stack of gift cards (Visa, etc sell them) and protect themselves that way.

That way you can only be ‘dinged’ to the maximum value of what you’ve charged into the card.
