OMG what a #$% week!

I haven’t been able to write much of anything until the server move was complete - then couldn’t write for another day while the DNS transfer was in progress.

IMPORTANT

If you tried to email me between midnight Thursday night and 11:00am Friday morning, I didn’t get it - so please resend (this includes messages sent through the contact form).

I think the last of it is over! Pretty much everything is live on the new server and email is back up and running.

I’ll be throwing one mean server-warming party soon to celebrate!!!

How was the migration? Were your providers able to migrate your site build and database for you, or did you have to download and rebuild your site yourself? (If so - ugh!)

Just dealing with domain migration weirdness by itself would be painful enough…

It’s a problem that I hope to have someday myself - and I’m curious at what it takes behind the scenes to resolve it.

I went with a Virtual Private Server with HostDime based on a recommendation by AskDanAndJennifer - who just moved there themselves. In the future if I have problems, I can upgrade my server resources on the fly - which you can’t do in a shared hosting environment.

Organic Girl - I still haven’t figured out why the site kept crashing after the big Digg - traffic was still elevated, yes, but to be honest, my site has had that kind of traffic before and was fine. I’ve spent hours on that part of the ‘investigation’ and at this point, I kind of have to let it go, because the answers just aren’t there.

But under big traffic surges, my site was getting more and more down time in general, so I decided it was a good time to make a switch and not worry about it anymore.

And Jeri - they were going to move the site for me, but my old setup wasn’t really conducive to a straight copy - so I hired Steve Johnson of TheFastLane.info to manage the whole thing for me - it’s SO good to know that for a few hundred bucks I don’t have to worry about a thing and I have someone I totally trust to answer my questions!

I’m guessing that it wasn’t your fault for your site being down all the time. Someone else on the server was probably using too much CPU power and BlueHost decided to down the accounts that were using the most CPU power, even if you weren’t going over the limit.

I can’t fault them for doing so, I just wish I had been better prepared for what happened.

I can’t fault myself for being less prepared either - it’s still kind of hard to believe that ‘little ole me’ needs a semi-dedicated server!
