OMG what a #$% week!
I haven’t been able to write much of anything until the server move was complete - then couldn’t write for another day while the DNS transfer was in progress.
For those of you who are missing my writing, please check out my ProBlogger Guest Post today on how Elite Retreat helped to change my monetization approach (with great results!).
IMPORTANT
If you tried to email me between midnight Thursday night and 11:00am Friday morning, I didn’t get it - so please resend (this includes messages sent through the contact form).
I think the last of it is over! Pretty much everything is live on the new server and email is back up and running.
I’ll be throwing one mean server-warming party soon to celebrate!!! ![]()

Thanks for being so transparent about your travails. While the traffic overload is a great problem to have - it must have sent you into an absolute panic, especially with technology that you can’t control directly.
How was the migration? Were your providers able to migrate your site build and database for you, or did you have to download and rebuild your site yourself? (If so - ugh!)
Just dealing with domain migration weirdness by itself would be painful enough…
It’s a problem that I hope to have someday myself - and I’m curious at what it takes behind the scenes to resolve it.
Wendy so sorry to hear about the recent server issues - I also think that congratulations are in order.
I can’t wait until I have that problem, and will probably hate it when it happens! I’m glad that it’s all over for you and I hope that you don’t have any more issues!
Saw your post on ProBlogger and just stopped in to say well done. Also, out of curiosity, what hosting did you end up switching to? I’ve been having some issues recently and am looking for recommendations on hosting with great customer support.
Hi Wendy,
I understand that your site crashed after making the front page of Digg but why did you keep having problems afterwards? Did your everyday traffic increase too?
No problem if you don’t want to go into details about your traffic. I’m just curious about how getting taffic spikes can be a problem.
Welcome back!
Welcome to your new home! May it serve you better than the last one.
Well, I’ll do a bigger writeup next week, but here’s a few answers now -
I went with a Virtual Private Server with HostDime based on a recommendation by AskDanAndJennifer - who just moved there themselves. In the future if I have problems, I can upgrade my server resources on the fly - which you can’t do in a shared hosting environment.
Organic Girl - I still haven’t figured out why the site kept crashing after the big Digg - traffic was still elevated, yes, but to be honest, my site has had that kind of traffic before and was fine. I’ve spent hours on that part of the ‘investigation’ and at this point, I kind of have to let it go, because the answers just aren’t there.
But under big traffic surges, my site was getting more and more down time in general, so I decided it was a good time to make a switch and not worry about it anymore.
And Jeri - they were going to move the site for me, but my old setup wasn’t really conducive to a straight copy - so I hired Steve Johnson of TheFastLane.info to manage the whole thing for me - it’s SO good to know that for a few hundred bucks I don’t have to worry about a thing and I have someone I totally trust to answer my questions!
I’m guessing that it wasn’t your fault for your site being down all the time. Someone else on the server was probably using too much CPU power and BlueHost decided to down the accounts that were using the most CPU power, even if you weren’t going over the limit.
Matt - I think you are right - they did admit that there were some other sites that were also under a heavy traffic load - and that because my site was the biggest drain on the server, it was the first to get cut. I can’t fault them for doing so, I just wish I had been better prepared for what happened.
I can’t fault myself for being less prepared either - it’s still kind of hard to believe that ‘little ole me’ needs a semi-dedicated server!
Hey wendy what happened to your feedburner chicklet?
It was interestin to see how many readers you have
Glen - I took it down because my subscriber numbers flatlined when I took out that BIG RSS button. I figured I’d rather grow the numbers than show them off.
Good to see you are up and running again!
Glad you got things moved, I know that’s no fun. Now, hopefully, you’ll have some room to breathe (and write)
Great Blog! I just stumbled upon it from who-knows-where! It’s awesome to see other women bloggers every now and again! *=)
Glad to see your back and going again. Be glad to see you up and posting again. I have come to value your information.
Glad you’re back. I wondered what happened and where you went.
