Before I even touch on the challenge behind this title, I wanted to introduce myself to those in the Sparkplugging community that don’t ‘officially’ know me yet. My name is Amber Watson-Tardiff and I am Wendy’s behind the scenes assistant. I occasionally write on our SOHO News, Tools and Technology blog, answer your burning questions via email and stay connected with most of you on Twitter.
Now that we’ve been introduced, let me explain the purpose of this post (and the posts to come).
Basically, I am about to become your guinea pig.
Many of you have expressed a desire to start a home based business but are scared to do it. You wonder, “Will I fall for a scam?” or “Can I really sell enough products/recruit enough people to make an honest living at home?”
I’ve actually had the same questions myself so I decided to use my own money, take my own risk and start a home based business (otherwise known as network marketing or MLM) to give you an open and honest look at what it takes to succeed (or fail miserably) in this field.
An Overview of Why I Choose Network Marketing
I’ve been following network marketing for 7 months now and I know the opportunity to make A LOT of money is there (meaning $200,000 to 1 million dollars a year). But I wanted to know if these companies can really back up their claims that ANYONE can do this with NO EXPERIENCE necessary. I also wanted to know if it was possible to make my monthly quotas without annoying the crap out of my family and friends, or whether I would be forced to put up my own money to float things along in a down month.
I may not have the answers to those questions yet, but I’m actively pursuing them on a daily basis. After spending a few weeks on training sites such as Danijohnson.com to brush up on my skills, I began to compile a list of companies that I thought I’d like to get started under. I figured it would have to be a company that sold something I liked or one that was doing good things in the world so I could sleep at night knowing I put something helpful in the hands of a client.
After days of research, I finally ended up with a super reputable company in the health and wellness industry. Without naming names, their green cleaning products are one of “Oprah’s favorite things” and the high profile/scientific endorsements behind these products are a mile long. I figured if I was really gonna do this, I might as well start out with PR on my side

I will admit that googling “Network Marketing Companies” and “Home Base Business” turned up some very shady results. The companies looked cheesy, spammy and borderline fraudulent- so much so that I was afraid they’d take my money and vanish in a few months. In fact, as I scrolled through the google results, I almost changed my mind about the project in general- but in the end, I was determined to give network marketing a fair shot.
So like any good consumer, I asked my business coach friends (including our very own Marla Tabaka) where to turn. I let them know that my goal was not to “get rich quick” and I needed a legit company in which I could naturally grow a home based business. I was then put in contact with my current “upline” (or the network marketing term for the person one level above me) and just started training today to become an independent distributor. (Ahhh ..the power of ‘word of mouth’ marketing. Don’t underestimate it folks.)
What’s to Come
I am going to blog with as much detail as I can on this endeavor without getting myself in trouble with the company’s legal department. I will tell you how much it cost me to get started and my continued monthly investments. I will tell you how hard or easy it is to meet my monthly goals, and I how much I’ve honestly made at the end of each month.
I’ll also reveal the top marketing and sales tips I learn along the way to help you grow your home business right along with me. From this information, you should be able to gauge whether or not network marketing is the right business for you and whether you could ultimately succeed if this happened to be your work at home job.
At the end of the day, that is the true focus of this site and Wendy’s vision. Sparkplugging teaches and equips people to work at home. You’ve already heard the ups and downs of freelancing from Lorna and Tamara, running a crafting business from Lisa, virtual assisting from Teresa, marketing from Susan and the truth behind blogging for dollars and life as a solopreneur from Wendy. Now it’s time to find out what’s really behind those claims of “Make Millions Working from home” once and for all! (Note: The person I am training under does happen to make a 6 figure income doing this thing, but scouts honor I am starting from scratch!).
So I hope you join me on this wild (and scary) journey I’m about to take. I want to be as open as possible, so if you have additional questions or want more information about the business (I’d rather name names or help you get started privately), then please email amber @ sparkplugging.com.
Stay tuned and welcome aboard!

Wow, good luck, Amber!
I’ve only known a couple people who’ve really made it big in network-style businesses… hopefully you’ll be my #3.
I know it’s possible, though; a close friend of mine is doing very well, and she tried a couple MLM’s (and failed), but now got going—and kept going, which is the key—with a company that’s a right fit for her, and she’s a star. Just bought a $300k house, a brand new minivan, pulled her family out of debt, you name it. So hey, it’s possible.
Good luck!

Amber–
Very interesting idea. I’m so skeptical of MLMs, but I would love you to prove me wrong and show that it can be done.
Thank you for not picking one that sells overpriced exotic berry juice that will skyrocket you to transformational health!!
And let me know if you want help marketing along the way!

Good luck, Amber! Although I know success isn’t a matter of luck.
It takes a lot of work, a lot of investment of time and money, and lots of support from people who know what they’re doing. Being part of the Sparkplugging team, you’ve definitely got that one covered!!
I’m excited to watch your progress and see you obtain the success you deserve.

Wow Amber – this is going to be an awesome series. So many of us want to achieve financial freedom but MLM has gotten such a bad rap over time that it is often the last thing people will consider. I don’t think it works for everyone but you are asking all the right questions and there will be many people very interested in the answers. I will be watching … and pulling for you to be one of the MLM rock-stahs – you definitely have the skills!
Oh … and by the way choosing a green cleaning product is very smart if you look at the latest trends on growth in that category and being able to quote “Oprah’s Favorite Things” will sure increase your chances of success.
Hey Amber . . . good luck with your project . . . if you need some exposure, I actually have a green site called greenhometherapy.com so feel free to come check it out . . and if you need any social media votes/submits, feel free to let me know. Wendy can vouch for me

Amber,
There’s a great saying…from acorn’s grow oak trees. Good luck. I run an online business and understand the effort involved in making a living.
I look forward to reading about your progress.
Congratulations on your new journey and best wishes to you. I guess you could say I grew up in MLM. Started with less than $ 100, earned my first $ millions in it, so I am a believer. My biz is in nutrition/weight loss. Originally I was a customer and lost 7 pounds in my first week. Initially I only wanted to share it with the people I love. So it began and then it took off like wildfire…
I credit much of my success to the fact that I:
a) love the products,
b) had a mentor who led me and held me accountable and
c) treated it like a million dollar business from the get-go.
Just because I could sleep til noon doesn’t mean I should sleep til noon.
My company groomed me to become successful, everything clicked and so far I have done over $ 25 million in sales. Best thing that ever happened to me. I get to help people lose weight and improve their health and get paid to share products that actually WORK. What is better than that?
You will get out of it in exact proportion to what you put into it, so give it your all and expect success. Follow a mentor with a proven plan and model what the successful people do. If you do, you will have the same results they do.
Sounds like you are in good hands and I wish you the very best.

Jill Koenig

I’m mostly curious about what company you chose. I’ve spent a fair amount of time with high ups at various places (including originals at Xango and OGI) and found, well, that they’re about as arrogant as it gets. Seems like they just want to hear about how good they, or their products, are.
Best advice I have? Don’t lose humility. It’s not worth the cost: They’re personal lives sucked.

Network marketing has a bad reputation because people have been burned with bad companies, and recruiting your friends and family can lead to disaster. There are good and reputable network marketing companies as well.If in doubt, head over to bbb.org (Better Business Bureau)

Hats off to you for wanting to know the TRUTH! As a budding entrepreneur I can say that it is not ever easy. I don’t believe it ever gets easier per say either…you just learn how to prioritize and manage your time more efficiently. I currently run many ventures and took a leap of faith by resigning my job for my goals (yikes!)..One I am also starting, (new to me) is real estate investing. I’ve got to say for anyone interested..you have GOT to read “The Pizza Delivery Millionaire” by Rick Vazquez. I knew nothing about real estate and this book broke it down for me very easily!! You can find it on amazon or their website..Perfect for all of us working hard for our futures!
I wish you luck on your journey. I’ve often wondered whether it’s better to take the approach you seem to be taking with the “entrepreneurial diary” approach to generate business or to stay problem/product specific, focusing on selling the network marketing companies products as a solution to a specific need or want of the marketplace. That way not only do you sell products, you also create raving fans who then see the opportunity as a viable solution for them too. Thanks for the post.
