I was going to post something entirely different today…something about giving.
But I made the mistake of first reading the post Wendy put up earlier and now I’ve got an axe to grind on.
So really, what’s wrong with people? How did some of us learn to be kind, polite and descent while others somehow missed that those lessons altogether? I just can’t comprehend being this insensitive, mean and cruel. I just don’t understand what motivates people to treat others this way. Is our world, and specifically the people of the U.S., so full of pent-up rage and hatred that we can treat people like this? Why? What’s the gain?
When I read comments like this I often wonder if the people are being truthful about how they feel or do these adolescent behaviors coming from people who want to stir up controversy from behind a username. I really don’t know.
What I do know is that we can’t go on thinking about each other with such dehumanizing distain. It hurts. It not only hurts those who are being flamed, it hurts those doing the flaming as well. Oh yeah, it does. How else do you develop such a hatred for someone if you’re not hold some deep self-hatred yourself? And when you express that self-hatred back at others, it only goes to deepen the wound inside yourself.
My grandfather once told me, “what you focus on, expands.” I’d have to say after living nearly four decades, it’s the closest thing to universal truth I’ve seen.
What I’ve focused on in my life does expand. When I’ve focused on negative, depressing or difficult things, I watch those experiences expand in my life. Yet when I focus on beauty, love and compassion, that’s what life gives me back.
It’s not a difficult concept. Though it seems to be one that’s missed by so many. When we hurt others, it’s ourselves that really suffer. And if we’re hurting others from behind a username, it’s like we’re hurting alone.
So let’s say, for a moment, that you believe ‘what you focus on expands.’ Give it some thought and share with us how you’ve seen that play out in your life.

I definitely believe that what you focus on, expands. Watch “The Secret” (DVD and book available).
Read “Think and Grow Rich”.
It has worked time and again for me, and for those I socialize with. It’s a natural law, like gravity.
I don’t have to pretend to agree with what you focus on expands. It’s true! Over the past few years, I’ve been focusing on understanding myself. I can’t believe the progress I’ve made and how much I understand others as a result. It’s incredible to look back on!
I agree, the good the bad and the ugly, they will take you over…in fact right now I’m going to read The Secret again…as I’m in the dumps and generating negativity all over the place. Thanks for the friendly reminder that this can be in my control..Leaving for a mini vacation with my hubby tomorrow and The Secret, and the Law of Attraction will be my focus..you are so right..

I need some positive “what you focus on expands”. I just lost out to a job that I just knew was mine and I was totally visualizing myself there and BAM I got a generic rejection email. Not even a personal letter or phone call after several promising interviews and great rapport. Now I need to get out of this “what did I do wrong” focus because I can feel myself turning to the dark side.
So true Dawud. Often it can be hard to understand where the illness etc came from, but to move forward we need to focus on our future, where we see ourselves being. The Secret is a great starting point, but having bought Michael Losier’s book on Law of Attraction, while I was in USA. I think this offers a great practical approach that extends beyond……… A workbook approach with good web back up resources.
It’s sad, the way people are today. What I tell my daughters about this (and what I truly believe) is that such people are very unhappy down deep inside.
People can be so cruel. I definitely believe in what you focus on expands…we tend to forget what impact on not only ourselves but others our negative words & comments have.
I loved the Secret and Law of Attraction. I’ll definitely go and have another read.
Be kind to each other….each and every day.
What’s really wrong in this case is that parents are not teaching children enough integrity, decency and kindness. It’s an absolute epidemic. Thanks for writing this, Dawud.
I’ve been following the comments on this.
I’d like to postulate that one of the things that leads to the lack of morality is the fact that more and more moms are working OUT of the home. I know this might be offensive to some - but I’ve seen the difference in my own children.
The Tipping Point (by Malcolm Gladwell) quotes research that shows that children are influenced most by those they spend the most time with. HELLO! If both parents are working, then the “family time” is spent doing necessary chores.
I know this from personal experience. My own wife used to be a school administrator, I was a university professor, and by opportunity and hard work, we are now BOTH at home. What a difference IN the home, and what a difference between our children and their classmates.
A friend of mine told me, “You can’t schedule quality time with children. You can schedule quantity time, and when the kid has a question, you’re the first person they see, so they ask YOU the question. That’s quality time.”
I completely agree that what you focus on expands. I just had my first child this past summer and I’ve been so focused on being a better person for her that I find that I am constantly in a much better place. And not only that but I find myself sharing that positive vibe with other people. I agree with Bill that it can have a huge impact on kids to be able to spend a lot of their time with their kids. Unfortunately some people just can’t do it. I’m currently working out of the home but am working towards working from home so that I can be there for my daughter. eMoms has been an invaluable resource as I journey towards working from home.
Thanks!
Easton, Bill…I’m with you. My own judgment is that many parents seem to have odd priorities. They forget that they’re raising a person not just dealing with some behavior they don’t like in their child. But what we set in motion for our kids at 3, 5, 8, etc is who they’ll be as adults. If we don’t teach kindness, courtesy, compassion, etc, they won’t learn it.
But what does ‘teach it’ mean? It means living it ourselves. Anyone who’s a parent knows that kids learn far more from what you model to them then anything you say. So as parents, we need to model these qualities - with ourselves, our spouses, our friends and relatives and our kids.
I can’t lie and say that I was a perfect teenager, my world was pretty upside down back then. More drama and angst than I care to say
a group of us was very mean to one girl in school and it got out of hand. She ended up leaving school. Our actions were childish, petty and fueled by all things envy - she was from a very wealthy family. When I think of how we treated her it makes my stomach curl and to this day I think of her and send apologies via the universe. I am so sorry that I was so small minded and allowed our misunderstanding of her foster such awful behavior. I can’t help but wonder if all of us in one way or another has a similar story. It’s my only one and it will always make me feel awful when I think about it.
way cool to have your ponderings back dawud
Thanks mom…I just can’t believe the way thing are heading socially. Where’s the caring about each other?
