The Deal that Almost Broke Me

I know. I’m a professional blogger. And you all have been wondering why the heck I haven’t been writing lately.
So, there’s been this Deal. The Deal I’ve been working on for 3 months.
It was going to be a ‘Really Big Deal’ kind of Deal. A ‘Putting My Name on the Big Time Map’ kind of Deal. The kind of Deal that I can’t talk about because you don’t talk about this kind of Deal unless the Deal is Done.
And thanks to a few factors, mostly the economy, there is now No Deal. Suffice it to say, I cried myself to sleep about three times over the last week.
And now, I’m picking myself back up from the hardest fall I’ve ever taken as an entrepreneur.
I almost couldn’t do it. But then I thought of you. And I couldn’t face you if I gave up.
So, thanks. You readers have saved my ass. And now I’m back.
And I’m even able to think about finding a New Deal.

Wendy, Thank you for sharing this. I think it shows a tenacity of character, and I admire you for taking a minute to mourn what was going to be the deal- and then get back in the ring and look for a new deal. Thanks for not being afraid to show all sides of this process. I can’t wait to see what you do next.:)

Hey Wendy;
Not sure if you’re a spiritual person or not.
But I believe that God works in mysterious ways.
He opens some doors and closes others.
Last Fall I was inches away from closing a six digit book contract with one of my clients. The money was set aside and it was gonna happen.
Then it rapidly died on the vine.
In retrospect it was the best thing that could have happened. A few months later 2 of the 3 major contributors were let go and the book would have been impossible to finish.
On top of that, it encouraged me to do some VERY large things that now make that lost deal look like the best thing that could have happened.
So just wait to see what the future holds for you
Sometimes fame isn’t all that…

You are amazing – and I’m hoping that the “deal” comes back around again – because seriously? You are awesome and it should.
I’m glad you are hanging in there, hon.
Let’s just hope that we look back someday and laugh about how Q1 of 2009 was far rougher than we ever expected, and the rest of the year was far better than we ever did!!

Ah I know. Sometimes it’s like that. You can’t talk about the details before the deal is done. Maybe because of the people (yourself included) don’t think the details can be given out to the world, or because you don’t want to jinx it, or maybe Howie Mandel isn’t in front of you. It’s sort of lonely, sometimes.
Hope ou have better dealership (is that the right word? most likely not or I wouldn’t be using it) next time around!

I know you know this and I know it’s no consolation, but this sort of experience comes with the territory of being an entrepreneur. You reminded me of a time not so many years ago when I spent, from memory, about 12 months on a Deal. Amazing figures were quoted, everything seemed possible and suddenly it all disappeared.
Thank you for your typical generosity of spirit in sharing, Wendy. I’m sure your resilience (even if that is understandably somewhat creaky at present) will be an inspiration to one or more of your readers who now or one day has their own Disappearing Deal experience!

That was just a warmup to a bigger deal – allowing you to learn from your mistakes, outline your priorities better and to build your business sense even more.
I know you are disappointed, but its only a temporary setback. Bigger things are on the horizon.
Hang in there Wendy. You are too good a person to not have the right Deal come around. There is a better Deal around the corner – I promise.

Oh, Wendy. I’m not sure about what the deal was but even if the economy is bad…they have missed the boat not grabbing you up! My thoughts are with you and this post just shows what steal you are!

Wendy – That bites. Really. Three months is a good chunk of time to invest and have nothing to show for it. But, ya know what? There WILL be something better. You rawk sister and maybe this little porthole had to close so a beautiful bay window could open in its place.
BTW, it was awesome meeting and hanging out with you this weekend. Your personality is even brighter in person.
Mmmwah!

Doing big deals is like climbing a tall mountain. Sometimes you trip and fall or take a path that doesn’t get you to the top. It only takes one trip on the right path to get to the top.
Other deals will come, you are way too cool for this to be the only shot you will have at the big time. When you get to the top just don’t forget the little people you met along the way.

Hang tough!
I’m so sorry Wendy. The economy sucks right now, and I’ve had 2 good Deals fall through just since January. I feel you.

Sometimes making decisions just plain sucks. It’s good to see you blogging here again. We’re glad to have you back
Hey Wendy – I’ve been reading your blog for months but never commented, not because I didn’t find it riveting but you know, just the time thing. Anyway I read this post and had to write you. Back in Nov I lost ‘the deal’ – I won’t go into here but it was devastating. I totally get how hard it is to pick yourself up from this stuff. Honestly, I nearly didn’t. But eventually, this entrepreneurial courage kicks in and we dust ourselves off and return for the next battle. Your post inspires me. I didn’t even have the courage to blog on it. I got another deal, not THE DEAL, but a deal. Did it make up for what happened. No. But in the end, as my mom always says: everything happens for the best. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what the best part of this is, but eventually you will. Take heart, you will come through this. Thanks for the blog post – I’m thinking of you and wishing you well! Penny twitter.com/bookgal
Don’t worry Wendy, I know situations like this can be really tough and disappointing, but you’ll get through it! The hardest thing to do in life is pick yourself back up after a fall and it sounds like you’re already doing that, so good for you!

I’m so sorry to hear that you had your heart broken over the deal. It’s a hard pill to swallow. I’m quite happy though that you managed to pick yourself up and kick your own ass back into submission so that someone like me didn’t have to.
It wasn’t your deal. Something better is waiting.

Dear Wendy,
You are now that much closer to the next big deal. No matter how much you know, train, plan, negotiate, work and work some more, nothing prepares us for the turbulence of reality. It takes courage to build and courage to rebuild, but I have faith in you. Entrepreurship is not for wossies and you are no wossie. You don’t have to like it, you just have to stay there until you like it again. You inspire me and I just want to remind you that you will hit your marks.
Hi Wendy… this is the first i’ve seen your page. However, as a writer I can truly empathize with you. Like all the comments here, I also hope things will work out for the best. Don’t worry, if it’s meant to be then it will find its way back.
Good luck!
