I think this post is a terrific start regarding more effective time management.

One thing that I wanted to chip in is that most e-mail client programs allow you to control when and how often the program checks to see if you have new e-mail. The default time for this check is usually 5 or 10 minutes; so, your e-mail program is constantly bombarding you with the "ding, you've got spam" bell that often.

You can try dialing back that check to every 60 or 120 minutes, if you can't afford having your mailer closed during the day.

its true, email could easily eat chuck of your time everyday, without you even knowing it! its too time consuming, not to mention all the junk mails! its good to be able to recognize junk mails by just reading the titles and sender, to eliminate online time opening the email

For years, I was a slave to e-mail. I finally made the jump to scheduling the reading of e-mail just as if the postman had delivered it. Now I keep my e-mail client closed, except for three times a day.

I've taken the time to set up rules and now 95% of the spam actually disappears before I can lay eyeballs on it.

I also no longer keep my Instant Messenger open during the day, unless I need to contact someone.

As far as working in chunks, around here it's real simple.

I get to work on the computer for about an hour before time to feed the animals, and do other morning chores. The wind often comes up by noon, and in the summer it gets way too hot to work outside, so that's computer time.

I'm an author and also am returning to the Internet Marketing world after a couple year's hiatus, so I now spend about 50% of my time studying, and 50% of my time (creative time) writing both my book, and the necessary advertising for my business.

Often, when I write, I then set it aside and return later to edit for content, grammar, and spelling before publishing.

At night, when I'm tired, I may chat for a while... or even just surf.

Great post and excellent insight on time management. i believe all internet community has this problem. there are so many things to do yet so little time. we must tackle our time management issues a bit more seriously if we really want to have some success online especially on the reading part. so thanks again for the tips.

Hi there,

I have read your blog and you have a very good post and blog. I certainly agree with your blog articles or should I say issue you are discussing. In fact, you should add more articles with regards to your subject more often so that I can come visiting to your blog.

How often do you find new and research stuff? Are there any opportunities that I can contribute to your blog. I believe other blog readers would love to read more related stuff. This way, your PR rank for this blog will raise if more visitors are coming.

Keep up the good work!

Hmmm! I agree that ignoring e-mail would save time, but since I got a large portion of my projects through e-mail it could also cost me.

One of my e-mail accounts is slowly being overtaken by spam. Deleting the growing list of spam messages has sort of counteracted the "thrill" of getting a new message, at least for me.

I sort of have forced down times so I got into a habit of multi-tasking all the time. I work as a computer programmer and certain projects will take 2 minutes to compile (that means, the computer is translating what I wrote to 0s and 1s so the computer can run them), so when the compiler is working, I really can't work on anything. That is when I read blogs, write emails, chat, browse the web, etc. However, I make sure what I do in that down time is more or less mindless, so I can still focus on work in the back of my mind without really working on it. That's just the nature of my work. I've tried to work on different projects during that down time, but that didn't work very well, because that actually demands my full focus and I ended up switching my focus back and forth. So yeah, I think multi-task is fine, as long as you know what's the main thing you are doing and the rest are tasks that you can kind of do on auto-pilot.

Great post Wendy. Another tip I follow is avoiding the pull of putting out someone else's fire. For example, if someone calls or sends an "Urgent" email, it's often hard to ignore, even if it really isn't urgent. So, what I try and do is let the person know I received their "urgent" message, that I'm unavailable at the moment and I'll respond as soon as I can.

I am the same way! I can hear the little "new email" sound in my house and it will take all of my strength not to run over there and see what it is! I really need to be better at that. Thanks!

LOL, you are so right about getting a rush at the sound of incoming email! I am probabaly the weakest of all: my email reader is on all the time, and I can't help it but look when a new email is announced.

Thanks for the reminder: I'll have to challenge myself and see if I can resist email reading for a couple of hours today.
