A couple of weeks ago when Ponn Sabra guest posted her article “The Top 10 Mom Entrepreneur’s Empowerment Tips” here on eMoms at Home, I received a wonderful surprise in my inbox – Alex Bellinger from SmallBizPod wanted to interview both of us for his UK based podcast. SmallBizPod is the UK’s first small business podcast. It offers interviews and practical advice for small business, startups and entrepreneurs podcast to the UK and the rest of the world. It’s also one of the top rated 5 small business podcasts in the UK.
Alex’s 41st episode featured Ponn and myself, as well as UK expert Emma Jones of Enterprise Nation. Both she and Ponn dedicated some great discussion to outsourcing work as a solopreneur. And I must admit, this is an area I myself need to learn more about (thanks for the push, Jeri!).
Ironically enough, the conversation got really interesting after we stopped recording, in which the three of us discussed why work at home entrepreneurialism, or “homeworking” as it’s called in the UK, is truly a phenomenon borne out of necessity vs. a desire for luxury. Since a successful career track in the United States typically doesn’t allow for much work-life balance, most work at home parents really start their businesses out of a necessity for flexibility and to create our own opportunities where none exist.
On the flip side of this, we also discussed the family-friendly culture of the EU, in which an employee in France, for example, need not work more than a 35 hour work week. As we Americans envy the governmental infrastructure that allows for more family and relaxation time, Alex also noted the cost of this kind of balance: namely that it can also hinder a country’s overall economy.
Fingers crossed, we can get that conversation on tape in a future broadcast. Thanks to Alex and Ponn once again for a really enjoyable talk – hopefully you’ll enjoy Alex’s delightful podcast as well!
