Really good list but I’d add:

drawing with chalks on the sidewalk

paddling or splash pool in the back yard

rock pool hunting with nets at the beach

building a tree house

letting the kids sleep in a tent in the garden

organize a kids version barbeque

water pistols!!

A most excellent list, and a great reminder that it is indeed summer!

It’s hard to remember when most of us are INDOORS all day working, away from the kids (and the sweet memory of having time to play in the warm sun).

Need for sun block aside, I vowed to take my boys out more this summer. Thanks for the suggestions & the reminder.

@Wendy :: Somehow last night I agreed to coordinate a bike ride to the ice cream shop for all the kids on our block, which might not be so cheap, lol.

@Mother Earth :: Thank you for the additional contributions. Our kids join a reading program from the library as well, we are certainly a reading friendly family. Your summer projects sound like they will be very rewarding.

to add to this if I may…

we always have a reading list going for the summer or join a summer reading program at the library

last summer my son read of all things war and peace

summers for us are often project times also : this year we are crafting college essays, doing a few mock applications and turning an epic resume into something unigue to my daughter vs some big long list of accomplishments

when your kids are older you’ll get why we do this in the summer !!

We do a lot of these things in the summer. They always become the most talked about events year round. I can’t get through a week even in the summer without the kids talking about our old camping trips.

And the ice cream trip bike ride is a huge deal around here. Kids go crazy for it, and it’s so cheap and so easy to do!

@Kelvin :: Give me wife and me a few weeks into summer and we might be looking for people to have our kids for awhile.

@Jeremy :: Thanks! As a kid I always loved swimming but as an adult not so much. We are fortunate to have neighbors with pools though and the park district has a great pool.

@Wess :: Lol, love it!

@Brad :: The Cougars are great and that is our usual destination. This year I want to check out the Joliet Jackhammers too, as their stadium looks beautiful from the outside.

Derek, you are so right about minor league baseball. Anybody in the Chicago area should check out the Kane County Cougars, here in Geneva. Single-A ball, great fun for kids and grownups alike. The pork chop sandwiches fabulous, and are worth the price of admission – literally.
