I started caring more about what I eat a couple of years ago when my son started eating more solid food. It might have just been all the business trips to California, but I decided that I should set better examples for my family. I'm not obese, but current appearance isn't the only reason to eat healthy.

I'm not where I want to be yet, but I've taken steps to get there. I've eliminated sodas from my diet. I now drink 100% fruit juices, water, and sweet teas. I'm working on eliminating sugar and white flour now. These two ingredients are the most detrimental to our health that is eaten on a daily basis. Just search online for how bad sugar and white flour is for your health.

I'm not much of a candy eater but sugar is still hard to eliminate, especially since I like sweet tea. Many things that you buy have it, even if you don't expect it to. My first step is to reduce or eliminate obvious sugar sources and then work on the harder ones. I'm working on doing the same for my son, but since kids are brainwashed into eating sugar by TV and even family, this is difficult. I have been teaching him what is good and bad for him. Last night I gave him the choice of root beer (his mom gave it to him) or a real fruit smoothie. I'm glad to say he chose the smoothie. Of course sugars in fruit are ok.

The next item to eliminate is white flour. This one isn't so hard to eliminate because most restaurants offer a wheat or whole grain alternative and it's easy to find alternatives at the store. I actually prefer whole grain bread to white bread. Kashi has good cereal with whole grains.

Something I've been working on also is reducing meat consumption. I've stopped eating beef except for the occasional steak or burger, but they have to meet high standards for me to deviate. It's much more healthier to get protein from plants than from animals.

So here are two tips that will help you improve your health greatly, stop eating sugar and white flour.

Nice work! I came to a simular conclusion in Sept of last year and have dropped 42 lbs so far. My advice... take it one day at a time, and every little bit helps. An apple instead of chips may suck in the moment but just do it for the moment.

way to go derek, for clearly outlining such wonderful why's and for defining the steps you need to take to take on your personal well being.

Since my work is all about prevention,I see a difference when clients really take it on - the things you do now will have huge impact on your later years. In the meantime you are providing a remarkable example to your kids, and beyond that think about what it woud be like to be a cool vibrant and healthy grandpa too!!

Here's a little tip from Mother Earth -snacks are not always bad - plan for healthy snacks instead. Eating a raw red pepper is just as much fun as eating an apple.

What could some healthy snacks be? Have those things available instead.

When hungry think protein, next raw veggies, fruit, and lastly those pretzels if you must. By the time you've had a bit of protein and some veggies those pretzels won't seem so interesting anymore

@Daniel :: Link? I didn't see a link on your site so please do share.

@Strong One :: Thanks! I'm looking forward to the challenge and eventually getting back down into the basement to start lifting again, it has been awhile but I still love to move the iron.

@Kelvin :: I knew it was bad as well, but I too was shocked by those numbers.

@John :: That is great to hear! This weekend the neighborhood kids ran me into the ground with round after round of ball tag. BTW, I still owe you some help with your header.

Such a coincidence- I too have started (back) on my regime, after being slack for more than a year.

Started it for the same reasons as above; well, almost all. It's still called getting lucky even after getting married. But now that I have 2 kids with a boy as the 2nd (assuming they are more physical than girls), I know I gotta physically be able to keep up with them when I have activities with them; and I am one who want to participate rather than just watching them.

Besides, I also don't wanna waste my wardrobe of pants!

Thanks for sharing this Derek!

I wish you the best of luck! You've already taken the most difficult step, knowing what your weaknesses are!
And your motivation is more than enough to get your motor running.
It won't be easy by any means, but to have your family as a catalyst and a constant reminder as to why you're doing what you're doing will definitely relieve some of the stress.
Keep us updated!
