When you hear that it is dad’s night to cook…how many automatically think of take-out food?
Apparently one of our local pizza places thinks that the majority of the dads are raising their hand right now as they are catering to that crowd with a recent coupon that was distributed.
The big letters caught my eye - Dad’s Night To Cook.
With a family feast for a pretty affordable price, I have to admit that their offer is pretty tempting. As a kid growing up, we had a long running joke - although I think there was far too much reality to really call it a joke - that dad’s night to cook meant we could expect take-out from a restaurant on my dad’s way home from work.
As the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree, I have to say that I am guilty of that as well more often than I care to admit. It isn’t that I don’t know how to cook either - as you might remember my dazzling display with the brown sugar rubbed chicken recipe from awhile back.
Am I too lazy to cook?
That is probably closer to the truth. My weakness with cooking is the actual decision of what to make as I can stand with the refrigerator and freezer doors open for an hour and be clueless about what to make. Give me a recipe that we have all of the ingredients for and I can cook like a champ - although even then I might find a reason that we have to go out to eat.
The nights that I do cook usually involve the grill - as that is just how guys cook…isn’t it?
As I begin to think about what will be on the menu for my next night to cook dinner - ahem, where did I put that coupon - I thought I would ask all of you…

Um, my parents actually cook in pretty similar ways, and as for me, I cook similar too. One thing is that we don’t follow recipes. The dishes we cook don’t usually have names other than something that indicates the main ingredients and method of cooking.
My philosophy is this: If I were to follow a recipe, I would need to get those items. If I don’t have them in my fridge, then I’d have to substitute them with something else. If I am to do that, then the flavor and time for cooking would be different. People have different tastes and you might be cooking for different number of people so most steps will vary. So it all comes down to common sense. If the ingridients and ways of cooking are both going to change, you might as well just make up your own recipe as you go.

Um…actually, when it’s my turn to cook it’s usually a fairly elaborate meal. I think my wife and I were professional chefs in another life. We both treat trips to the grocery store like they’re some kind of pilgrimage. We stand in the produce section for what must seem like an eternity to the guy stocking apples. In the kitchen, my wife and I have a system. I do all the chopping. I usually do the frying or boiling, and she usually does the baking. Man, we love cooking. For breakfast this morning I made fried potatoes with sausage, mushrooms, onion, garlic, and some eggs. Makes me hungry again just thinking about it!

When it’s my night to cook I’ll usually plan ahead and prep something for the slow cooker. That way, when we get home it’ll be something hot and different.
There are definitely nights when there is, for example, too much homework to do and we’ll end up doing hot dogs. The kids especially love these “quick dinner” nights when we have breakfast for dinner.
