If I Didn’t Have Pictures, You Would Think I Was Lying

Over at Derek Semmler dot com, I’ve recently been discussing my desire to purchase a laptop to be used for traveling and remote blogging.

After purchasing an Apple MacBook at the Apple Store yesterday, I decided to return it today as I found that it was cheaper to buy through Amazon. As I mentioned here, purchasing through Amazon was going to save me roughly $200.

The reason that there is emphasis on the “was” is because in the process of returning the laptop to the Apple Store, I incurred an expense of $627.32 - I couldn’t make up a story like this if I tried but for any doubters, I have the pictures to prove it.

While en route to the mall, driving along in the left lane of the highway the car in front of me ran over a piece of metal debris in the road that flew up into the air. As if there was a magnet attached to the front bumper of my car, my attempt to swerve out of the way was not effective.

Bumper Damage

Unfortunately, I have a $500 deductible on my auto insurance and according to the Scion dealer and their recommended body shop, replacing the bumper is going to run me just over $600.

While my attempt to save myself $200 may have been prudent, in the end it has cost me an additional $400 in car repairs. After exhausting the list of “If only…” scenarios as to how I could have avoided this situation, all I can do is laugh and chalk it up on the board of life’s experience.

Have you ever tried to save money only to cost yourself more?

Not exactly in line with the thrust of the post…but..

I had a fender bender last week, totalled my old car. Bought a new Accord last Saturday. And my car got all keyed up yesterday. In Skokie. It’s not like I work on the west side of Chicago or anything.

@RubiaLala :: Yeah, looking on the bright side it is just damage to the car and nobody was hurt. But it still sucks.

@khylek :: Dang, sorry to hear that but glad you were okay. My damage happened on the way to Woodfield mall in the ‘Burg so we’re not too far from each other.

That kind of stuff happens to me all the time. Not to long ago I decided to take the scenic route on the way to my parents. Well that view of the scenery cost me $150 in speeding tickets. :D

Story of my life. I got paid $27 for doing a PPP the day before yesterday. I thought it’s be a slam dunk: 50 words and a 30 minute video.

1. Camera battery died had to wait
2. Had to research oysters (borrrrrring)
3. My server went down
4. Youtube was down and I uploaded vid 3 times a total of about 1 1/2 hours.
5. Finally got it online through Google Vids.

Took me about 3 hours on the thing. $27 / 3? I’ll do the math for you: $9 an hour. Not horrible but i could have done a lot of other focused things in that time.

You get smart though, you get better at it all. That’s what living’s about in my book, but then again I’m in the funny farm. ;)

Been There. 3 weeks after I bought my first new car some metal object flew off a postal office truck and no amount of swerving was going to save me. Oh and swerving on the highway during rush hour is not the best idea.

good luck with the pc… i mean mac

Aw man, that sucks!

Your question reminds me of back when I used to live in the suburbs of Chicago. I lived somewhat close to the border of Indiana, where gas is cheaper. So, I’d always drive past the fifty million gas stations by my house just to get to the gas station on the Indiana border. It took a while for me to figure out that I was probably costing myself money for making the drive all the way to Indiana and back! But hey, these high gas prices make people do crazy things.
