Man Cave Monday :: The Basics

Guys, do you have a place that you can call your own?
No, not the bathroom.
We’re talking about a Man Cave!
A Man Cave is a dedicated area, such as a basement, bonus room, garage, or even a free standing shed, where a man can retreat for quiet time or party time with the buddies.
The distinguishing feature of the Man Cave is that it is designed (and decorated) by the man and for the man – basically all of the things that the woman in your life refuses to have in the rest of the house can be found in the Man Cave.
It is a place where you might find things like a poker table, sports memorabilia, video games, or even a personal keg-o-rator.
The possibilities are endless!
How popular are Man Caves?
The Man Cave is popular enough to warrant its own television show on the DIY Network (which my cable package does not offer) hosted by Jason Cameron and ex-NFL football player Tony Siragusa. Together they offer ideas and do-it-yourself plans to turn your own space into an official guys hangout.
There is even an Official Man Cave Site featuring a Cave Gallery and information on how to make your Man Cave the place that you want it to be.
What would you want in a Man Cave?
Some guys prefer a place to hang out while others prefer a more rustic place. Or maybe you prefer something a little more luxorious.
The important thing is that the Man Cave is what you want it to be.
After coming home Friday night to a house full of children bouncing off the walls enjoying a Camp Rock party, I could have really used a Man Cave of my own and have started a rough plan of what mine will look like.
Do you have your own Man Cave?
Here is your chance to show off and let all the other guys drool over your Man Cave. Send me a few photos and a brief description of your Man Cave to be featured here on The Man Page.

My ideal man cave would be a room that I could go in to listen to my music, write and smoke the occasional pipe (tobacco, don’t worry…) or cigar to unwind.
What would it look like? Shoot…. at this point I’d take a new Port-O-Potty. =)

My brother has an AV room set up at his house, complete with 5.1 sound system, projector, white screen, air conditioned, reclinable seats.
I, on the other hand, wouldn’t mind just a small-ish room, with a desk I can plonk my computer equipment, big enough for a printer, maybe a second screen, shelves where I can store stuff (discs, peripherals), perhaps a set of speakers, broadband.
I don’t ask for much
Any good Mantuary requires 3 things:
1. Workbench
2. Kegerator
3. Old Couch/Chair
Once you have those, you’re good to add whatever else you need to get away from it all.

I have one in progress, the one I’ve mentioned on my blog (http://www.acuminate.net). The pictures are much more up-to-date http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3933415#273381995_cityH. It currently includes an old couch, a water cooler/mini-fridge, and my computers. It’s actually two man cave’s in one.
Half of the building is my office where I work. It will soon include a flat screen TV for movies and Wii. I’m working on adding a deck to the front of it for some grilling and friendly gatherings.
The other half is a shop. I store all my tools there and work on building projects, such as the building itself.
Both halves are a good place to relax and get out of the house for a bit.

I have been missing something in my life for quite some time. I now know what it is – a place that I can stare into the fire. I remember this concept as part of Mars and Venus. I remember that this is an innate to the human male as eating, drinking and any other human element.
I used to have a cave, but have lost touch with having one. I will begin my rough plans for an alone (not lonely) place very soon.

I have a man cave I guess. I have a small room in the basement where I keep all of my tools, saws, and wood working equipment. I go down there when I need some quiet time. There is no place to sit and relax, but then again I don;t like to just sit and relax.
UUh.. does a man desk count??

I’ve pretty much given up on this since I’m about to have another girl.
I have no place to go and be a man in my house…I might be able to do something out in the garage or maybe on the patio.
my hubby wants a man cave but he’s losing fast with the fact that we now have 3 kids! He goes outside on the deck or out to our lake and smokes a cigar to maintain his manliness, LOL!!

The best man-cave site I have come across has to be The Mantuary. Do check it out sometime.
I wrote this primer on creating a man cave after enjoying a few episodes of the DIY show:

Every man should have one. Even if it’s nothing more than a shed or a little corner in the garage. Great site for Mancave Supplies.
Photos of my man cave shed office are at the url above. Nice little getaway, nothing spectacular, but built for my needs.
