Guys, whether you like to admit it or not, there are things in life that can bring us to tears.
Seeing your child suffer through illness or injury.
Losing a loved one.
Getting hit in the nuts.
A variety of sports moments dealing with people we have never met.
Wait a minute….a sports moment?
In the list of things that have brought me to tears over the years, I have to say that one of the strangest involves sports related moments.
Just a few moments ago I was reading a post over at the.[ED]ition about the last game in the Vancouver Canucks season – which is likely Trevor Linden’s last NHL game – and I have to admit that my eyes became a little watery and my throat got the tight feeling when you are trying to hold back the waterworks.
Here is a man that I have never met in my life, yet I am fighting back the tears. Not only that but I am not even a Vancouver Canucks fan.
Watching the response of the fans, his teammates, and the players from the opposing team was very touching. Personally, I nearly lost it when the video showed two elderly people – which I imagine are Trevor’s parents – enjoying the moment.
As a father myself, I can appreciate the pride that his parents must have felt at that moment.
So why do guys cry over sports?
I’m not sure that I really know the answer to that question.
Maybe it is something that brings back memories from our younger days when we played sports and were fighting for that dream of becoming a professional athlete. Many guys pour their heart and soul into following their favorite sports teams – one only hopes they put as much into their families – and that can bring about a wealth of emotion in good times and bad.
Maybe it is just ingrained into our DNA.
Whatever the reason may be, I can tell you that there have been a handful of sports moments that have brought tears to my eyes and I am not afraid to share that with all of you.
When the Chicago White Sox won the World Series – check.
When my son recorded an unassisted double play in Little League, twice – check.
Every time that I watch the movie Rudy – check.
Am I the only one?

We’re simply hard-wired to feel emotion at moments of great triumph or accomplishment. Some of us show it with tears, others with simple big smiles, others with hoots and hollers. The stoic Vulcans among us are seemingly unaffected, which is a shame.
But it applies to all types of events that show someone or a group of someones succeeding in the face of adversity. Or a celebration of that success, such as a player’s retirement. It’s a great testament to their perseverance, and that resonates with us.
I personally cry every time at the end of “Mr Holland’s Opus” when he finally conducts his symphony, made up of musicians he’s taught and lives he’s touched over the years as a teacher. Gets me every time…
I also teared up when Peyton Manning and Dane Bradshaw played their final games at Tennessee, and they were barely into their 20’s!

I did, when my favorite baseball team in Taiwan won their first championship in team history. I started when I was little, back in 1992, when they were consistently among the worst teams in the league.

I cry every year on opening day… and at various points throughout baseball season… simply because I am so darn happy!!!
I also cry at the movies… during some TV commercials… and when I hear certain songs…
Yes, I am a sissy. But at least I cry over baseball!
Great post!

Rudy makes me weep like a baby, every time. Ditto “Brian’s Song” and a host of others.
I get misty-eyed every single time the Star-Spangled Banner is played in the Olympics too, even if it’s a sport I know or care nothing about.
