After spending a busy weekend trying to digest all that SOBCon08 had to offer, I thought that I would turn to all of you for your input on something.
Next week my wife and kids are packing up the car and heading out to visit family. Unfortunately my work schedule will not allow me to join them so I will have the house to myself.
It has been quite some time since I have been home alone so I want to make the most of this opportunity. Here are a few of the things that crossed my mind:
- Watch a few Steven Segal or Jean-Claude Van Damme movies…in my underwear
- Throw a big, juicy steak on the grill…in my underwear
- Sit and watch sports all night…in my underwear
- Play video games all night…in my underwear
- Invite the buddies over for a poker night…staying fully clothed
While all of that sounds perfectly fine, there isn’t too much on that list that I don’t already do from time to time. If your wife and kids were heading out of town…

Not that the opportunity comes up often, but usually that’s when I invite friends over to play video games, watch sports, have a BBQ, or just hang out with the music blasting.
Normally all of these events involve lots of beer drinking.
As with above, plus:
- fall asleep while watching tv (ie, not in your own bed), because you can;
- never have to make your bed, because you are man of the house, when you are alone;
Underwear is optional in all the above, too.
But why stay at home when there is no one to answer to? Clothed, I mean.

This opportunity presents itself to me about twice a year. I always have plans to write or work on an online business idea with no distractions. Unfortunately, I usually just end up working later at the office because no one is waiting for me to come home.
Although I’d love to join the boxer battalion around the card table, I have a bit of a compulsive side as well. I’ve rarely had this happen – sick days, mom and child outings, etc… What I (unfortunately) find myself doing is cleaning. Yes. CLEANING! It’s a hold-over from a completely O.C. mother and a habit that I just can’t seem to break. If I get more than an hour at home alone, you’ll find me moving furniture and dusting around, above and under everything in the house. It’s almost like my own little penance for not calling mom more often (but that’s another post altogether).
Sure, I’m a freak. But I have a clean house.

With no one else at home…underwear would definitely be optional.
But I would probably use the time to catch up on my HUGE to do list. Once the work is done…then I would have a few beers and play playstation into the wee hours of the night while drinking like a fish.
