Quick Business Cards and Labeling in a Pinch

Far more often than I’d like to admit, I realize that I only have a few business cards left in my wallet and I have an out of town conference scheduled in 5 days.  Yes, I could pay overnight printing costs and overnight shipping costs, but I usually take a pass on these fees and just print my own.  True, they’re not Moo cards but they do in a pinch and are economical in both time and money.

Worldlabel.com has a terrific autofillpdf label templates that automatically populates all your cards with text and images, eliminating the need to cut and paste over and over again in each card field.  I chose their WL-OL244 (Avery 5371 size), standard business card size 3.5″ x 2″.

When you get to the PDF template page, scroll down to the label size you want to use and click on the red links to download the template.  I downloaded the Image Autofill/Text template for my business cards because I wanted to include my logo.  You will need a PDF reader to use the template.  Worldlabel recommends the free Adobe Reader Version 9, however, whatever PDF reader is installed on your computer should be fine.  In the event you don’t have a PDF reader, you can follow the instructions in the link above to download and install.

After downloading, open the file in your reader, make sure the highlight field is on and you should see this:

The image size on the template is 1 inch high x 1 inch wide.  If you upload an image that is bigger, the image results will look warped, so be sure to resize your image before you upload it.  Most image editing software can accomplish this easily.  After you have your image resized to 1 x 1, click on the template text.  You will be prompted to upload your image from your computer.  When you find your image, click select.  See screenshot below.

After you press select, your image will populate into all the fields, as shown below.

Now you will want to insert your text information such as name, address, phone, email, etc.  For more text options, such as bold, italics and different colors, press Apple + E for Mac users, and Ctrl + E on a PC.  A toolbar will appear giving you additional text properties. In this toolbar you will see “more”; here you can align paragraphs and text in fields.

For my text, I chose American Typewriter in a red color.  I typed my text into the first text field, bolded my name, and then pressed Tab.  The rest of the business card fields populated and I was ready to print.

Since that was so easy, I decided to make some shipping labels for the office.  I downloaded the WL-OL150 (Avery label 5164/8164 size), 6 labels per sheet and I selected the Auto Image/Auto Text PDF download.  When I opened it in Adobe Reader, it looks like this.

I followed the same steps as my business cards.  Inserted the logo, and then formatted my text.  See the results below.

Yay!  The easy stuff is done.  Next on the list – how to get my passport renewed in 5 days….
