Save The Environment & Money Using These Print Utilities

When I was working for an office automation company, I was attached to the photo copier department. As you can imagine, in that department, we did a lot of training and demos and ran through a ton of paper quickly. One of the things the company instilled in me was to recycle that used paper. Next to every copier in the company, was a paper recycle bin. Staff were expected to put in any messed up copies – that didn’t contain sensitive information of course – into the bin and we did. Any time we needed scrap paper or paper to do personal, department memos or inter-department memos, we reached into the recycle bin.

So it was only natural that when I started my own business and had to foot the paper bill myself, I really began to pay attention to how much paper I’m using. Now, I’m not a gung-ho environmentalist, but like the idea of doing my very little part so, the ability to save some paper made me and my wallet feel good. But truth be told, I still like reading books and reports on paper. Thankfully, there are print utilities that make this a non-issue.

Two I’ve found and used over a span of 8-9 years are Fineprint and ClickBook. They have different features but by and large do the same thing. They allow you to print 2, 4, 6, 8 or more pages on one sheet of paper. They also make it super easy to print booklets – which was my favorite thing.

In ClickBook there are several more options including the ability to create your own printers. Which means, if you print a form regularly and like to have it formatted in a certain way, there’s no need to re-do the print setting every time. Just create a printer and print to that. I also like that it comes with a PDF printer so you can not only create PDF’s but create them in booklet form, banner form or any imaginable way.

In both software, you can also find out how much you’re saving by printing your document in the format chosen. In the screen shot below, I saved 50% of paper when printing this ebook that’s 118 pages long. You can also print double sided to boost your savings further.

Thankfully many of the newer printers provide you with *some* double sided or 2-4 page per sheet options now. But if yours doesn’t, ClickBook or Fineprint are definitely good options.

*ClickBook has a Mac version too.
